I would say people from California have higher standards than people in So. Fla. But to most, that 'higher' is just normal, basic standards. It seems like they are asking for SO much from someone in So. Fla who is not even expected to greet customers. In California the attitude is 'act right or we will find someone to replace you who will'. In So. Fla nobody cares, including the management, so 'clerks' get away with anything. So, these whiners from NY and CA are actually normal, expecting decent service.
they were getting decent service. The situations I've seen were not in Florida but in those states.I would never yell Or raise my voice to someone unless they did that to me first and the only place where I have done that in Florida is in Homestead, several times by the way and I guarantee you none of those clerks were Cuban. Ironically Florida City which is right next to it and much poorer has excellent customer service.

Ignorance = comedy on the Miami Forum as this is better than cable. I guarantee you people in the Brickell Financial District wear suits and ties(no matter how hot) and it is run more professional than at a high school level as all have received at least Bachelor degrees in Business. Maybe on certain days they have dress downs, but appearance is important when representing a company.

Too many blanketed statements being made , people aren't that stupid and it lends less credibility to the source.

true, in part, but after the banking chaos during Bush´s administration, a lot of rich people regardless of nationality (and that includes US born millionaire titans) are converting their savings in Euros.

I should add that in the three countries I lived where English was not the primary language, I did learn make my best effort to learn the language and in which one of the languages I have now have near native fluency.

I made the effort by enrolling in night classes and purchasing books to assist me with learning the language. I did not petition the government, and whine about why no one will cater to me because I do not know the local language, never once did I live in a country and expect people to adapt to me (though there were Americans who really did have that attitude).

I can vouch for that, I work/live in brickell and wear a suit every day. But, business casual is the required attire, and it is more relaxed than in other parts of the country because of the weather. We can wear short sleeves, no tie, not tuck in shirts, etc. But I keep my suit in my office, and wear it most of the time because I must wear it when interfacing with clients, which occurrs almost on a daily basis.

That's common in other parts of the country as well, as long as you don't have to deal with customers face to face. Some industries are also more casual than others(fashion, entertainment, tech) I personally never liked business clothes. They're ugly, expensive, uncomfortable and outdated.

As far as speaking Spanish it's NOT an exaggeration and you will get dirty looks if you don't 'habla'. I have not seen this in other states (NY,AZ,CA,TX) that have large hispanic communities.

And despite what some have stated, there is NO professionalism anywhere in Miami. Not from doctors, government, service industry. NOWHERE. In spite of getting paid minimum wage, I have not seen the same lack of professionalism from employess at big chain stores in other states.

Please stop deflecting and making excuses. YOU PEOPLE should get off the forums where you sit all day trying to protect your own and go out in the communities to try to find ways to fix all the issues.

If you take 100 people from Japan, 100 people from Iceland, 100 people from Russia and bring them to the United States, do you think the first language book they will pickup is Spanish?

Is the New York Times written in Spanish or English? Newsweek, Time?

How many American movies are made in Spanish compared to English?

Why is the American Constitution written in English?

The world is not flat and Miami is not the center of the universe. If Spanish was the national language, Bubba in West Virgina would be sipping Moonshine-o. It's Flagler Street not Calle, fool.

The argument that people in Miami are bilingual is another complete joke. Being able to ask, do you want fries with that in 2 languages does not make you a linguist professor. Unless you have a command of the language including proper use of verbs, adjectives, nouns, inflections and the structure, you are not bilingual.

Hell, I dumb my words down here just attempting to get some assimilation of my point across and even then, it's often totally lost in space-o. Forget about any conversations using colloquialisms unless you prefer speaking audibly to the hearing impaired.

I get a chubby everytime I find someone here in Miami that can even string a proper English sentence together. I have to speak to the indigenous like I'm talking with the infantile, and find myself finger pointing more than mouthing. Miami should come with subtitles and flash cards.

So don't say the US has no national language there Pedro. It does and it ain't Miamian. I know English is harder to learn than #2 Spanish and it's easier for you to speak but get off your a$$ and learn English or don't join the workforce until you do, if you want my money that is, which apparently you do.

(I'm going off on this rant and don't know what they understand and don't. I might as well be typing in Swahili to some but I'm used to this.)

Now, back on topic and let's get to the core to those who actually understand English. Not only do they bring their 3rd world language and force it down our throats with a contempt of English which makes Miami uninhabitable for anyone who is not fluent in Spanish, they also bring their 3rd world business attitudes with them, and that's the root cause of the lack of professionalism in the workforce. Doing business in Miami is like doing business in Havana and Bogata and if you're happy with that, you'll like living and working in Miami. People in Miami do business like they drive.

It's little wonder there is no sustainable businesses or a diverse economy in Miami and the job outlook is bleak as a result. Take away the beach and visualize Miami's economy. Who in there right mind would come here? Political refugees and prison escapees?

Even those who possess the best of convulted logic can't possibly hallucinate that Miami is a better city because of the immigrant influence on business here. The only different in the way people do business in Miami and Pirates, is a an eye patch.

Yes, the Colombians with their cocaine business built the city, congrats, I'm sure the founding fathers are proud of that bullet point on the history lesson and some in Miami sight that as "business commerce". Miami is a city notorious and rife with corruptions and one of the most dangerous, drug infested and worst economies in the entire United States. Good job!

You guys did it your way, and look at what a fine place it's become today. The only thing you can't screw up is the beach and let a major hurricane hit this place or an oil spill and you'll be killing and eating one another just to maintain your already overpriced existence here. The only thing bigger than the risk of financial destruction should the tourist industry go south, is your ego. Manatee BBQ anyone?

Miami is both a business and moral rat hole compared to the rest of the USA and the smart money is on the way out. Look at the demographic changes here in Miami over the last 100 years and chart that, to economic progress and that should help foretell the long term future of Miami.

I'm done.
