Default How close can we get to Miami w/o crime factor....

Thanks in advance for your advice...

We are basically NY transplant moving to Florida. We are thinking southeast Florida.

We love good restaurants, being able to walk to stores, close to beach, dog friendly.

We are also pretty conservative in terms of economics. We donate to our favorite charities but we don't like government deciding where our dollars are spent.

I like to shoot trap and other sports so I would like an area with a good fishing and hunting club.

Must be within 45 min of Miami...gasp. (my wife demands shopping...LOL).

Thanks,
J

Actually, none of the popular shopping places are in Miami. Sawgrass Mills in in Sunrise, Aventura Mall in Aventura, Dolphin Mall way out west, Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, Merrick Park in Coral Gables (this is closest to Miami), Sunset Place in South Miami, Dadeland Mall in Pinecrest, and The Falls in Kendall. Some others in Palm Beach too. Anywhere you live, you're probably close to one of them, and far from all the others. If you lived in downtown Miami or Brickell, you'll be driving far for most "real" shopping. I learned this the hard way.

note: Merrick Park, Sunset Place, and Dadeland are accessible by Metrorail, Aventura has frequent bus service from the beaches, but I don't recommend public transportation to any of the others.

Miami is safer than NYC any day.

What are you looking for? I'm assuming if you're willingly leaving NY you're gonna want to live in a house. As I said in another post, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove and Kendall. All are safe, all have beautiful houses. If you want a high rise, go to brickell, can't beat it.

All of these areas are safe and you will not have a "crime factor"

You can be right in the middle of downtown Miami and not have to worry much about crime.
For what your looking for Broward county is more of the right place for you. Not Miami.

What kind of shopping does your wife demand?

I really like NYC layout and I think nothing here gets even close to that. I think she will still have to drive to do some shopping. Everything here is malls and huge parking lots where you need to write down a code for your parking location. I hate malls like Aventura, Sawgrass, Dadeland etc I rather drive to a strip mall or small shopping center. But some people love malls and maybe your wife is one of them.

Some of he walkable areas are a disaster, all you find is boutiques and expensive restaurants. If I wanted an urban lifestyle I wouldn't even consider this place. The walkable streets don't have decent shopping.

But if you are still determined to move here the only place I would recommend is Coral Gables around Miracle Mile, but I guess you would have to live in a condo.
