Sorry, South Beach. It's just not worth the crap to visit any more.

I can accept the pricey accommodations, the expensive food, the automatic 15% gratuity, the noise, the overpriced everything of SoBe. But Florida is chock full of crazies and the service people, with rare exceptions, are indifferent, surly and unhelpful.

My complaints, in no particular order:
  • Why do 1 out of 5 South Florida drivers drive as though they were trying out for Fast and Furious 17? It's ridiculous. Blip your lights if they nearly take off your bumper, and you get slammed brakes, the finger, and an invitation to fight. Very classy.
  • The gangster types harassing random people, myself included, on Ocean during the dinner hour, was one of the more unpleasant aspects of the visit. Not a cop to be seen anywhere, either.
  • When looking for a car in a parking lot of a casino, some young POS seemed to think I was looking at HIM and I was also harrassed. What is it with you people?
  • The waiters were, as described earlier, indifferent and made no attempt to make visitors feel welcome. There was one exception: The Cafe at Books & Books, where the waiter was perfect, friendly and was tipped accordingly. We actually cheered when one waitress broke a smile, a feat we did not think possible.
The only friendliness from the locals, apart from the hotel staff (5 star friendliness) was from a random escort that ended up on the porch of my hotel at 1 AM, but I wasn't buying.

This kind of crap drives away your tourism dollars.

Yep, I agree with everything you wrote, and I live here. But I rarely go to Sobe, for many of those reasons.

***MOD CUT***

I had the chance to move to South Florida and chose Hawaii instead. Best damn decision I ever made.
