I can't emphasize enough how important it is to humble down the population. Pinochet did a good jewb on it.

I'm guessing, but don't know that our hotels are not 100% full during summer. Push convention business in summer time and make it worth their while to come. Don't give 10% discounts on hotels, give 50% or more.

If Miami is all about the about weather and the beaches and cruises and parties it doesn't take but one hurricane to make those things go away. This all eggs in one basket thing is likely in part what's pushing us to the top of the depressed list. That's the city business planners fault, Miami needs forward thinkers.

Hell, we have a great port here, why not attract more industries that export? Make is easy to do business here, and cheap and people will at least "consider" Miami.

I find Miami has this all or nothing attitude. Pay our price or we don't need any of your dollars. That's a stupid attitude IMO when we need every dollar we can get in the first place and the economy is down across the board and everyone else is lowering prices for non essentials.

You can't expect to compete in a price driven market if your competition is less no matter how good "you" think you are. "Sumtin' bedder thun nuttin"

I don't know, and I'm no economists but there seems to me to be a lack of planning for growth here for whatever reason and it's no surprise the economy here has tanked when we rely predominately on expendable tourists dollars at a time when people are cutting back on spending.
Miami - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia- Maybe this will help give you a start to what Miami is all about, I'll admit it is Wikipedia, but it will give you insight as to the economy of Miami. Don't forget there is a lot of competiveness within the state where convention business is concerned. We are considered the "Cruise Capital", but even up the road 20 miles away Fort Lauderdale is sinking their teeth in to that.

That's why this city won't get anywhere in the future. The ''i only worry about myself'' attitude is what it's killing this city.

Hopefully a Latin American recession will finally put a crimp on ll the free money that ruined Miami. If the previous link is correct, it may be sooner than we think

Well sure they are, you been to FTL latley? Most everything is cheaper up there and overall it's a much more pleasant place.

I don't know anything, I just got here 6 months ago but some of this makes no business sense from an outsiders viewpoint.

You would think the way tourists are treated here they were not paying at all and that can't be good for future business. Seems like the motto here is " let's try to extract the most amount of dollars we can in a one shot deal and we don't have to be nice about it because you're just a tourist and we'll never see you again." They almost act they are doing you a favor by taking your money.

12 million visitors annually with 17 billion made from tourism that is a lot of sheering, they must be doing something right, maybe tourists especially Europeans do not care about attitudes as probably most are arrogant themselves and plus for the fact that the exchange rate is very ideal so fleece on and add in those gratuities.baaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's right and I think Miami believes there are an unlimited amount of sheep.

It's killer expensive here. Zoo, 15.00, seaworld 40.00, rent a bike 25.00 for two hours. You have to pay to park then pay more fees to get in and we don't even have to talk about eating out and what that costs.

I've seen this business model before where things were so high it didn't matter how many they sold. The margins were so great they figured they didn't need every deal and if you wanted it, you bought it or did without it. They didn't care, they made their money the day before.

That's fine until the day when the sales don't come. You don't have those high margins and if you refuse to lower your prices, you'll be the one doing without.

"I'll show you, I'll go broke before I lower my prices" is not the way to stay in business in a flailing economy and let's face it, times are tough in the US right now and no good news in sight. Gas prices $4.00 a gallon and it's not even summer. How many people will be driving/flying to Miami this summer vs. last?
