Hi everyone

I'm not starting this thread to be a sht disturber of any kind, but I'm quite curious. I'm aware of how Latin Miami is, but when I was there I saw literally two asian people (by this I mean "east asian" including Filipinos). It was weird.... I was really quite shocked, however, I was just in South Beach/Downtown Miami. I'm from Toronto and there are plenty of Asians and a large Filipino population. I know there is somewhat of a Filipino community up in Jacksonville but I'm wondering about their presence in Miami. Are there any filipino restaurants? (grocery) food stores? Are there any particular 'Filipino' or asian areas/neighbourhoods?

I'm just curious..... and if I was ever to move, I would probably miss the food/people/culture!

Thanks

There used to be a moderate Filipino (particularly) population here, but lately I haven't seen any. When I came here in late 1999, I noticed they were as popular as any other nationality.

there is racism towards asians. (then again there is racism between every nationality here it seems). ive seen it myself directed at a taiwanese boss i had when i worked in miami beach. its got to be tough for them. also alot of them are rather peaceful culturally and it is a highly confrontational culture here. there is however a slowly growing thai population out in the redlands surrounding and supporting a thai buddhist temple out there. its really quite a shame we dont have more asians here with all the fresh fish and all the asian herbs and vegetables which are just too easy to grow in our subtropical climate. there are asian grocery stores though. i can get the ingredients for laksa or halo halo if i so desired. and also there is an asian culture festival where asians gather from all over the state (mostly thai though)

Not a large Asian population here in general. Does suck as there aren't a lot of authentic restaurants as a result.

There are Asians scattered around the city, with many restaurants but no grocery stores.

And Filipinos? I've only encountered a few but nothing HUGE like in Canada or in Cali.

Racism towards asians?? Maybe in Homestead, because the average Miamian couldn't care less about race.

winterfront: the racism ive seen both with a coworker at oracle by the blue lagoon area and with my boss in north miami beach. the only asians down here are the ones by the thai temple but i dont know really any of them. "because the average Miamian couldn't care less about race" that is such a lie i cant even believe you could say that. that actually boils my blood somewhat. ive been on a jury here where the jury members hated each other so badly racially that they couldnt come to a deliberation. omg. you must be trolling me...

jack: i know of 3 grocery stores here. youre probably just not looking for them. theres lucky market on bird road, tims on us1 down about naranja i think and one next to pho thang restaurant on colonial drive in palmetto bay.

that's too bad... I wonder why there are so few Asians in Miami? perhaps there used to be more Filipinos before as winterfront mentioned. I used to have some (filipino) family that used to live in Miami a long time ago, maybe nursing salaries were higher in other states like California, that's why they left

I know, unfortunately there's not a huge population like in California, but do Filipinos tend to be in one area at all? what about the asian grocery stores?

Racism towards Asians? What a joke. This board is really going downhill when the only person I can agree with is Winterfront

Yes, probably in homestead. They seem to hate everybody there, based on my horrific customer service experiences in that branch of hell

I wish there were more Asians in Miami..and there is racism. I don't think there is any particular area where asians are concentrated. The church I attend is 90% filipino..that's because my wife is from the Philippines. But the population is scattered and low it seems. I think that's unfortunate.
