Default 2011 FCAT Score: Miami-Dade schools earn a "B" grade

The Miami-Dade school district has more high-performing schools than last year and half as many failing schools, state education officials said Thursday.

Among the five “F” schools: Florida International Elementary Academy, the charter school touted by Gov. Rick Scott during a January visit to Miami-Dade County as an example schools throughout the state should follow.

Overall, the Miami-Dade district maintained a B grade.

In Miami-Dade, 70 percent of all elementary and middle schools (or 228 schools) earned an A or B.

The district’s top performers included Phillis Wheatley Elementary in Overtown, which improved its grade from F to A.

Very good news for an improving public school system in Miami!
(Now I wonder what the "naysayers" are going to say on this forum!)

The FCAT is a joke, but I guess it can show some school's progression.

I wouldn't call it a joke, but is it necessary,if there are good teachers teaching the curriculums to their students that satisfy the state requirements and the teachers turn in the students grades during the year,I would think that would be suffice.

Good to know about the overall good test scores county wide. I really hope this trend continues.

On another note, I feel to much emphasis state wide is put on focusing on these tests. Still, since it is here, It is good to know of the progress county wide.

Big ups to Miami-Dade When one FL district does well on the FCAT, it reflects on the entire state, considering Rick Scott's massive education cuts. Keep up the good work. At the same time, if you're teaching to the test it would make sense for students to perform well since they know what to expect.

"(Now I wonder what the "naysayers" are going to say on this forum!)"

I would not classify it as naysaying, but come on now, standardized tests? It is about the worst way of measuring academic performance, especially the way it is being conducted.
