I Think there are just differnet groups of people that are on here .........what i mean by that is that there are people that are making a decent living and just drive to work and to do thier "adult" chores and they don't notice what other people are talking about when other people say there is problems in thier neighborhood.......those type of people "the sheltered adults" are the ones who would look at that pic with the 2 guys by the pimped out car and say, "there goes the neighborhood" and they never notice the poor and thier problems. They just have work on thier minds and what TV show is coming on later tonight and they are oblivious to the guy with "will work for food" sign standing in thier perifrial vision by the bus stop.......

Well those 2 guys might be good guys and might not be i dont know them personally so i cant judge them but the way they look has to tell you what kind of world is around them in "thier" neighborhood and they might just be influenced by actually seeing stuff go down in thier neighborhood . People can say yeah i live there and i see no sign of anything ghetto or anything going on in the whole city of Hialeah that is bad.......

but i think those are the type of people who just block out the reality of how the youth is living and they don't want to give these kids any help by being a positive influence (by just talking to them like a human) instead they just get in thier car glance at these kids and ignore them and go to work in fear of a stereotype.....Hialeah is just a normal suburb for Miami but if you put Hialeah in another city besides L.A. it would be a real culture shock to those people....

i wouldnt call hialeah a suburb but i wouldnt call it a ghetto either although a lot of people do

for example, almost all of my middle school friends dropped out and are in gangs. you might say they are bad kids but they weren't, they are a product of society, and this is what miami-dade society makes. if you go to hialeah high school you will see a lot of this. teachers talk to you like you are a retard or a convicted felon. out of the 7 high school friends i had only 1 is left. even the teachers expect you to drop out. to quote my freshmen science teacher

"take a good look around you. come next year you won't see most of these people ever again."

Maybe they are a product of their parents and immediate family? Or maybe they made some poor life choices?

Surely there are many success stories in Hialeah. How did turn out so well if they are from the same society?

Its true on a personal level for me too....i swear i dont remember any of the kids i used to chill with getting to graduate and go to a graduation ceremony......i ended up dropping out in the 3rd week of 11th grade.....i skipped most of 10th grade......i ended up getting into the American High adult ed program on 37th ave......it was about 11 people in my whole class.....me and 2 other friends of mine went there from American and there were other kids from Carol City High and Norland.....We had one black dude from Carol City in class that was always asking if anyone wanted to buy a stolen car that had been chopped ....

i guess that was what he was into when he wasnt at school.....during breaks for lunch we would go around back and smoke weed......i remember one day drinking some beers with 2 of the guys before class and we sat through class drunk.....i was just surrounded by all of these influences and there seemed to only be 2 kids in there that were serious about getting thier degree .........

it was a stupid time in my life but back then i had seen people being called a p.u.s.s.y if they didnt smoke some weed and when people even labeled you like that then everyone started messing with you and eventually someone would "try" you and start a fight with you....thats not why i smoked weed back then but that was the mentallity of kids in school down there....any kind of weakness and you were labeled and then would get jumped or have to fight people at school and with that kinda fear it is hard to focus on the subject in class......i knew people that did do good in classes but i was just surrounded by bad influences when i would go home and they all went to my school....i didnt feel like fighting people at home too so i just tred to do things in a way to where no one could point anything out and label me but i never started smoking weed until i started having problems from my parents divorce....but everyone i knew smoked back then and it was always around but i refused then i had the problems with my parents......i was an A - B student until i went to Miami-Dade schools....before that i was in 6th grade in North Florida in Lake City schools.

There was fights in school in Lake City but nothing like in Miami......i seen some dude get beat up after stepping on another guys shoelaces.....and some black dudes tryed to jump me on my first week of highschool.....they were walking towards me and the first guy shouldered me into the locker and then asked me why i hit him then they started laughing and were going to jump me but i ran before they could hit me and luckly there was a security guard right outside of where i ran to.....but i didnt tell him i just stayed in the area where he was until those dudes left.....someone stole my books out of my locker one day too.....and i would see fights at lunch all the time ........i remeber this exchange student in my German class was there for a couple weeks and he was a nice guy always letting us cheat off of him and we would joke with him and stuff.....but one day he didnt come to class and a week later we still didnt hear anything from him and then the next day we found out from our German teacher that a bunch of black kids jumped him at Burger King at lunch time one day and he was too scarred to come back to school......Burger King is where most of 47th ave (a gang) would go eat lunch and all the gangs had thier specific resturant at lunch

well even when i was there at the adult ed program only one of my friends from American high graduated that program....i dropped out due to circumstances with my parents divorcing at home and i got my GED 2 years later when i lived in Tennessee....i came back to Miami to stay with my father for a week or 2 and got my Ged down there

I worked at Hialeah High (go thoroubreads) and Palm Springs Middle. From a teacher's perspective, we don't expect anyone to fail, ever. We have the task of motivating and teaching the students so they are able to learn. In Hialeah, much like other schools across the county, there are major family, school and community problems. Many times the students themselves have no sense of civilized behavior, much less respect for themselves or others.

At Hialeah High I taught a 9th Grade American History ESE class, and trust me, I saw it all. The indifference and defiance from the students and parents. Many of the teachers did and do care. You will always have some teachers who are disillusioned, but I think the majority of the negative perceptions of teachers are really more a reflection of today's youth's dissatisfaction with their lives. They are not used to anyone caring about them at home and find it phony when a teacher shows any interest and puts boundaries and expectations and holds the students accountable.

In short, these recent posts portray what MANY Hialeah students go through, whether at HML, Hialeah-Miami Springs or HH. People who think relocating to Hialeah from the Midwest or some other wholesome place are really going to put their children in a tough situation. If it is this hard for students FROM the community, imagine arriving as an outsider.

Hialea is an acquired taste I suppose, but I think most people who promote Hialeah are from there and they are portraying perheps a self-pride and triumph against life's odds, as opposed to recommending it as a stellar community. To the students who have graduated from these schools and ultimately triumphed (getting your GED, stopping drug-use, etc), you have managed to pull yourselves up by the bootstraps and I recommend you drop a note to you old teachers and let them know that you got on the straight path. They would most likely write you back and continue encouraging you (I know I do). In Hialeah, there is a huge amount of pressure to go with the flow, the gang and thugged out ghetto wannabe culture, and to step up and be a real student is seen as a weakness, and it is not fair to those who want to succeed. The students who have survived this should be commended.

People who think Hialeah is just any old suburb of a major city have a view of Hialeah that is 50 years outdated. This is not a place that people relocate to by choice rather by necessity. It is easy for people to mention that Hialeah is not that bad, since they have a high paying managerial job in a factory and don't actually have to live, study and shop in the community for all of their needs.

There is a huge scam culture, of people trying to beat the system. There are also good people that fly straight...but make no mistake, this is not the American dream most people yearn for themselves in the long run.

Final note, some really cool people come out of Hialeah. Some of the funniest and most interesting people you will ever meet are born and bred here. Let's hope things improve for the city in the coming times...
