believe it or no, once upon a time in the early 90s the goverment had to look to the other side when it came to prostitutes ( aka jineteras) mainly because they were desperate to entice Canadians, and Europeans to the island. The solution? Make tourism spots where no Cuban could get in. It works for a while till Europeans, Canadians stopped going and then they had to finally allow the subspecies, sorry the Cubans to get into Hotels.

When you speak to the customer again tell him to visit Cayo Coco. Varadero is an overrated piece of crap tourist destination.

Cayo Guillermo is fabolous .

Sex tourism is ruining the pleasant vacations normal tourists want to experience in Cuba .

Cuban men are just in the same position as those young Cuban girls, they are in need of money and they feel jealous since European middle-aged women don't go for Sex tourism as European middle-aged men go for.

They don't like tourists running loose, they want them packed in luxury resorts.

Of course, if you are a "solidarity" backpacker in a group organized by some leftist "pro-Cuba" organization, then you will be a hero.

The layoffs are not for real, they just change them from one place to the other, last time I was there they laid off a bunch of people from Ministerio de Industria and put them to chase mosquitoes in the "Mosquito Brigade". A surrealistic country, really.
How can you say backpackers are discriminated? I think you're watching too much ''A Mano Limpia'' on TV.

When i went to Cuba in January i saw ALOT of tourists in Old Habana walking around taking pictures, and by the Capitol as well. In the old parts of Habana there are always groups of tourists and a tour guide showing them around the old historial sites.

Seriously did the last time you went to Cuba was in 2006-2007? Because some of the bullcrap you just mentioned i didn't see.

Now the layoffs part is true.

I was there 5 months ago.
Yes, you always find tourists in those places, no backpackers.
Layoffs are not real, the whole country would starve to death.
I don't watch "A mano limpia", I've seen some taped programs in Cuba.

__________

Last plane I took Madrid-Havana there was a ratio of three women per each man.
Not only middle-aged, also women straight out High School and "abuelas".
Oh, yes, mulatones with a Black Decker are a hot item.

--------

Cayo Coco is not up to American standards, those belonging to Spanish chains are not up to Spanish standards and they are expensive.

Not to mention hotels run by the Cuban army (Gaviota).

Any hotel in Dominica is 10 times better, better food, cheaper and more jineteras, since jineteras are not allowed into resorts in Cuba.

No, not early 90's...During the early 90's Cuba was the best sex tourism destination in the world.

Why did they stop sex tourism in 1998-1999 with "Operación Lacra"?

Somebody told Fifo (Castro) that the reputation of his socialist paradise was tainted because "pioneritas" (socialist youth organizations) were heading to hotels and beaches to hunt "Yumas" (foreigners).

So Fifo went into rage and that's the end...

Cubans in fact were getting into the hotels a long time ago, so they were allowed since the law was not working.

Castro studied at the Jesuits and the entire revolution revolved around the dubious fact that "the revolution stamped out prostitution" (not true), so sex tourism is not politically correct but tolerated.

Backpackers, on the other hand, bring nightmares to Cubans. They remind Cubans of massive agricultural campaigns in which everyone was forced to work in the field, or they remind them of their Internationalistic Wars, or "Educación al campo"...many things that people are trying to forget.

Backpackers are not well dressed, they wear sandals and may have some BO problems...Cubans dress well and are always clean, no matter how poor they are, and when they see that a foreigner is dirty or badly dressed, they think that he's a slob or just a weirdo of some kind.

Just to recap, backpacks are synonimous of "Voluntary Work" and long walks to Sierra Maestra to emulate "El Comandante", and their long and strenous Military Service....just an awful sight for Cubans.

A foreigner from a western country and a backpack don't match in their minds.

And there won't be any as long as the Castros are alive.
All supermarkets and malls are the direct property of "El Comandante" and he sells of the products at 240% of their price in origin.
