I'm getting a TV today and was wondering about two questions beore I go and get it:

1.) When I buy a TV, do I nees to register it or something in order to pay a monthly fee to the government? (hopefully not but this is the case in Europe)

2.) Do I get any free programs or do I need to order something to get FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC?

Every apartment building in Florida has to have Cable. Cable TV, so when you buy the TV you should have a place to plug it into the cable but you have to pay for the cable unless it is already part of your lease. Talk to your landlord about who you need to call to activate your cable. There is no giving money to the government, this is America. Private companies provide cable. Those basica stations can come free, honestly I am not sure how you get them but yes. But they will come in horrible reception etc..

Wow this is a first. I have never been to Europe so I don't know how things work there...but here we have the FCC that regulates the airwaves to death: radio, phones, cell, tv, cable, etc. You pay the government through FCC fees and taxes that are added on to your monthly bills.

You can get free, over the air tv with an antenna....

To answer your question, yes, you can get many national channels for free with a simple table top antenna, including ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and many local stations. There is no tax or fee to own a TV.

You can't do that anymore as analog is obsolete, everything has gone to digital so he will have to purchase a digital receiver.

Most new TV's should come with the receiver built-in. However, good point in case he's getting a TV monitor w/o a receiver.

We have a new TV that we only purchased for my daughter to use the PS3 with. It is able to pick up some over the air channels. Sometimes they're pretty laggy.
