Joe Carollo's Chevy Impala idles at a red light on North Bayshore Drive at NE 14th Street. Dressed in a neat white polo shirt tucked into pressed khaki pants, the former Miami mayor is on a short tour of what could be the most ambitious redevelopment project in the city's history. "Here is where the Genting Group wants to put a fountain," he says with a scowl.

The light turns green. As Carollo cruises toward 1 Herald Plaza, he points to the perimeter of the Miami Herald's employee parking lots. "Those sidewalks belong to the city," Carollo asserts. "In their promotional video, Genting is building over them and this street I'm driving on."

I have walked through that area twice and anything would be better than what is there now.

They are probably mad because they do not have their hands in the pot.

The one thing noted in the article that I do not like is that it says "one of three" gaming licenses in South Florida.

You know all three licenses (if that's all there is) would go to massive companies. Part of what makes the Las Vegas area great (although it is slowly slipping away) is that there are some independents out there.

Part of Atlantic City's problem is that power has been in the hands of two companies for the most part; Caesars Entertainment and Trump. There have been some changes as of lately, but it still has a long ways to go. Trump Marina is now owned by Landry's and has become the Golden Nuggest, Resorts and the AC Hilton are no longer owned by the same people, Revel will soon be opening and there are talks about a Hard Rock Hotel coming in as well. This competition helps the consumer.

It doesn't make any sense to legalize limited gambling. It's either everyone can get a license with due process or don't even bother.

What a biased and terrible piece of writing. They put so much on some violations which the company has had with $400,000 fines etc.. All big companies break rules at some point. American Airlines has been fined millions in the last decade by the FAA so has Southwest and other large airlines are they terrible companies? No, it is just a matter of chance and things going wrong once in a while.

I really do not care what former mayors of Miami think. These guys obviously have not ran a great city, the potential this city has is massive and it is the morons who have been running the city the last 20 years that keep it down and so many of them are corupt and just plain stupid people.

Oh no, a sidewalk which NO ONE USES is going to be destroyed, oh no an area of downtown which looks terrible, has no activity and IMO is a huge waste of space is going to be used for something will bring tens of thousands of jobs, tens of thousands new visitors, hundreds of millions in tax dollars, and even more to the economy. You know what I think I am going to go ahead and keep those unused sidewalks.

The politicans need to be smart here, they need contracts with genting, they need to make sure what they say they want to build will be built. However they also need allow the city to grow. Where ever the tax money goes from this (if it hopefully does happen) I hope that the state, county and city use it for good things like public transportation expansion and schools. These are the two biggest problems in Miami. But knowning poltics down here they will just all get raises and their friends who were hired to be their assistants will be 100K a year.

This should be allowed to be built. Thankfully Joe Carollo is not the mayor anymore. Not that the city politicians are much better now especially commissioners but man it was even worse 10 years ago.

This project is pie in the sky and a future white elephant. Armed with endless amounts of laundered and funny money, over the years dirtbags have devastated the south Florida area with overdevelopment. It is always including giveaways of public land. Those criminals from overseas overpaid for the Herald property and I hope that local politicians burden them with red tape and they lose millions- or billions.

I've heard Wyoming still has plenty of undeveloped, vast amounts of land. Maybe a move for you is in order.

I drove by the herald site last night on my way to Brickell and wow what a terrible piece of downtown it is. If the city/county/state can get contracts on Genting doing just half of what they are planning give them the space!!!! The area has NOTHING RIGHT NOW, would you rather have just nothing sitting there?? Or maybe something that will bring in money, jobs, tourist and entertainment for locals also.

What valuable asset would this abomination bring to this already vice-filled city? Gambling, low-paid service jobs or? The Miami Herald used to have many employees, but has failed due to a changing economy. Putting a complex like this Genting crap in an area like this makes no sense. I would rather have it stay the way it is than become a fake sin city streetcorner. Casinos right now are restricted to tribal land and existing pari-mutuel facilities like horse tracks, etc. Case in point, Hialeah race track which should have a casino, although I object to changing the historic buildings to do it. South Florida already has several casinos, and I agree with the above posting that if this beehive of corruption approves this white elephant eyesore to have a casino, there should be legislation for any hotel to have a casino. Why not have a casino at the fontainebleau or the Eden Roc, or at the inter-continental hotel? Of course not. This abomination depends on selective legislation to give it an advantage over other facilities. If gambling is such an economic boost lets allow it everywhere and make Miami the better version of Las Vegas. However, be prepared to host a whole new set of problems.

We have that too in Florida. I moved to rural Florida to improve my quality of life and it seems to be working.
