Default Genting expects to control Omni Center by next month

BY ELAINE WALKER
EWALKER@MIAMIHERALD.COM
Genting Group has reached an agreement with the owner of the Omni Center to move forward on a friendly foreclosure on the property.

The Omni Center is set for an auction on Oct. 27 and if all goes according to plan, Genting should have title to the property by Nov. 7, said Jessica Hoppe, general counsel for Resorts World Genting.

Genting last month gained control over the entire $206 million mortgage on the Omni, which had been in the midst of foreclosure. Argent Ventures, the owner of the Omni, had been contesting the foreclosure prior to the Genting acquisition. Terms of any agreement between Genting and Argent have not been released.

....But Hoppe also said that in order for Genting to meet its aggressive timetable of opening the entire Resorts World Miami project by Fall 2014, the company would like to get The Miami Herald out sooner than the May 2013 deadline specified by contract

More money to be lost to the Omni site. I see more like a ghost world site when this idiotic scheme succeeds in only one thing- destroying another familiar Miami landmark.

What was in the OMNI area before it was built? Was it just original Miami buildings, an empty lot, etc?

A miami landmark? More like a Miami failure. It has never lived up to what it should and could have been. That area of downtown needs some drastic changes. Wonder what Genting wants to do.

As for genting getting the herald out earlier it all depends if the casino bill passes in the next few months. If it does who knows they might give the herald some more money to get out quicker.

I never cared to much for the Herald building look-wise especially being on the Bayfront, I will be glad to see it go for something more contemporary.
