Default A lot of questions about Miami

This may be a longshot, and if it does happen it wont be at least for a year or so.

I grew up in Orlando almost my whole life until I moved to Las Vegas last year. But believe it or not, I never went to Miami even once. I never had a chance to and when I did, my parents said it was "too dangerous" (I was under 18 at the time). My family all lives in either Orlando or Jacksonville, so I was always either in Orlando or Jacksonville, GA (get it?) when I visited family lol. I never went any further south than Lakeland sadly

Im planning on moving back to Florida either when my lease at my apartment is up this coming June or when the girl Im currently seeing (if things go well) turns 21. Also I want to spend some time with my father who is currently battling lung cancer in Orlando (but winning)

Ill be 22 this December, my girl will be 20 a week before me. She had actually told me she wants to move to Miami Beach after she turns 21. Now I have to say she is latina (nicaraguence) and I am white, she also has some family in Miami

I heard in Miami, that if you do not speak spanish you will not last long (IE Finding Jobs, socializing with others, etc)

Is the driving in Miami really THAT bad? I hear that drivers in SoFla just dont care

What is the cost of living like in Miami? I hear its much higher than Orlando

I dont want to offend anybody or start any thread wars because this is such a touchy subject, but I know the caucasian population in Dade County is very low (18.1% according to City-Data http://www.city-data.com/county/Miam...County-FL.html) This doesn't bother me at all (a majority of my friends in Orlando are Puerto Rican or of latino descent) And I dont judge by skin or ethnicity, but I would me being white be a problem for anybody? Once again, hope no one is offended by this question

I dont even know if this move to Miami will happen, but if my girl and I are together by then and decide to move, I am open to living in Miami, since it would be all new to me. Plus my family will just be a short 3 hours up the FL Turnpike

You'll probably be fine. Most of the people who the census call "Hispanic" are actually Caucasians or part, only they speak Spanish as their first language. Miami Beach is where all the Americans and Europeans live anyways no it's no issue. Be open minded, you can learn a lot. Biggest issue you'll have is money. Don't expect to live upstairs from the Kardashians. If you and your girl are realistic about your incomes and your expectations, you could be very happy.

Due to the economy, just getting by is about what you'll be able to do if you don't have degrees in good paying occupations. But MB is one of those places you got so much entertainment for free. If long walks on a beautiful beach, cheap eats at city diners, and bargain hunting on Lincoln Road (very doable btw), maybe using the bus instead of a car - you'll be fine.

If you feel compelled to keep up with the Kardashians, things won't be so happy. Also caution, don't lose your girl to some slick high roller. It happened recently to one guy one this forum.

I suggest you get down some basic to intermediate Spanish. Having a GF which speaks spanish you could do that in a year. It will help on the resume. Right now it is hard to find a job anywhere though. This is esepcially true for Miami. But most people do speak english. Just some people have this horrible attitude against speaking english. Unless your in a 98% Hispanic neighborhood English should not be a problem.

Yes, naturally it is. Miami is a much larger and dense city. Everything will cost more.

No. It is usually the people who are white who have the problem. If you dont have a problem with it than most of any problems are gone. Besides, Miami has a large Hispanic population but most of those hispanics are white to begin with, of European decent just like white Americans. If people have a problem with it you probably dont want to get to know them anyway
But of course you need a job to be down here. It is more expensive than Orlando and jobs are not easy to find.
