Question Traveling around Miami

I am planning a southern cross-country trip in January. As far as Florida goes, I am planning on taking an Amtrak train from Savannah, Georgia down to Miami. I will probably stay there for two nights but what I am not sure about is how to get around. I've never been to Miami (or Florida for that matter) and will get into the train station about 6:30 PM or so. How do I get to the hostel/hotel/motel from the train station and how do I get from where I'm staying to the airport in Miami when I fly back home? Are taxis my best bet?

From Amtrak you can transfer to the MetroRail (the local train) and take that to downtown Miami. You may have to transfer to the MetroMover in downtown depending where your hostal/hotel is.

Where are you staying?

I'm not sure at this point. I have just firmed up on when I'd like to arrive and fly out, though. I'm not too picky, I just want something that is affordable and within the vicinity of the Amtrak station and airport. The Amtrak train is scheduled to arrive before 7 PM but it could be late. Do you know how late the MetroRail and MetroMover run until?

You're not going to want to stay by the airport/train station, there's nothing to really do there.

You'll either want to stay in Downtown/Brickell or Miami Beach. In Downtown and Brickell you'll have access to Metromover (free) and Metrorail. There are easy Metrobus connections over to Miami Beach.

From Miami Beach there's a special bus that goes directly from the beach to the airport. It's called the Airport Flyer.

You're best bet is probably to take the Metrorail to Earlington Heights station and get the 150 Airport Flyer to South Beach. There are hostles in South Beach, but some require a foreign passport to stay there. Keep in mind it is high season, hostels may be full by that time of night, and the cheapest hotel you could get is probably over $80/night. There are some cheaper motels along Biscayne Blvd. (metrorail to Govt. center then a #3 or 93 bus), but it depends on your tolerance for slow busses to/from the beach and wherever else you want to go. I can't think of any motels/hostels in downtown Miami, only high-rise hotels. Near the airport and amtrak are not very safe areas to stay. Biscayne can be a bit sketchy in some parts, but I'd still choose it over the airport/amtrak area.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I've been looking into Miami Beach and there's several cool looking and affordable hostels. Some even offer full breakfasts and dinners for free! I might stay an extra night since one full day doesn't sound like it'd be enough. Miami Beach also seems to have a good transit system to the airport. There appears to be transit from the Amtrak station to Miami Beach on this "Route L": http://www.miamidade.gov/transit/library/routes/112.pdf If anyone here has experience using these two kinds of transit services or anything else to contribute I'd love to hear about it.

I have never used it but I have heard it is easy to get to the airport from Miami Beach using buses.

Your making the right choice by staying in Miami Beach that is where you wanna go and what you wanna see.

The "L" is extremely slow and goes through some of the worst neighborhoods of Miami, plus not all of the "L" busses actually go to the Amtrak station. Take the Metrorail and the 150 Airport Flyer, trust me!

Yes, it sounds like Miami Beach is the place to see.

I'll keep that in mind. Which station is better to depart at and easiest to get to Miami Beach? Miami or the station in Hollywood, anyone?
