South Miami Senior High - Class of 1989 - GO COBRAS! LOL I saw that there was a another fellow Cobra on here. And yes, the WINDOWLESS school! But that was back in the day since they built a whole new school next to the old one since the original building was built on a trash landfill in 1977 and was sinking.... ummmm yummy! LOL Its at least reassuring to know that we have a long history of payola in Miami (as in building a school on a landfill) and its not something that just cropped up recently! We have history brothers and sisters! ROTFLMAO South Miami was interesting as all of the kids that got kicked out of the private schools ended up at South Miami. So you had this rich kid v. poor kid vibe that was entertaining. I must also share that I am from the same graduating class as Marco Rubio (yes, the dude responsible for the supposed "tax reform" here in Florida) and the spanish singer/actor Carlos Ponce who is actually in a soap opera now on spanish-language television. Those were some awesome years... good times... good times... LOL

I always hated those windowless "prison camp" schools. Are they going to demolish the original school now that they built new buildings at South Miami? It's really funny that in the 80's they built those "bridgepoint" townhomes on the other side of the landfill! I was just thankful to be able to go to Southwest high school instead of Sunset as I was near the border.

Hey tallrick... back in the day I guess they bought a "four pack" of buildings... maybe at a discount sale? LOL Those buildings were prefab and there were four that were identical. South Miami, Southridge (which has since been expanded and doesn't look quite the same as the others) and there are two others (can't remember their names) on the north end of the county... all the same exact prefab building. I remember as a little kid when they were building Southridge in these big pieces like a giant puzzle.
Back in 1989 South Miami had these HUGE cracks in it and they were estimating that the school maybe had another 10 years of life before it got too dangerous. Well, they are still using the "dangerous" building, and from my understanding, they are just waiting for it to get to the point of no return before they raze that. From what I was told, the new building wasn't an "addition"... it was actually meant to totally replace the old building.
And aw man Tallrick... you didn't go there! Now you took me down memory lane with the Bridgepoint townhomes. LOL Those townhomes are actually very nice. If you note, they are at a much lower level than the street. It is because they had to dig out all of the garbage to get to a stable surface and it was way too expensive to refill. I had a tight group of friends that always hung out... we were all together in the tv journalism magnet program. I knew this girl that lived in those townhouses and she gave us free reign of the place. So, after school, we would tell the guard at the front that we were visiting her and then we would just hit the pool. It was amazing... it was a really nice pool and there was never anyone there! I remember Sunset high... it was a great school at the time put was amazingly overcrowded. Wasn't that the school that had classes in the hallways? My main focus other than my own school was our rivals... which was Coral Park.... grrrrrrr..... co cobras! LOL
South Miami was an odd school at the time as I considered it a public "private" school. Most kids there were from families that were very well off, and you would always see the latest clothes on all of the students and fastest cars in the parking lot. Lots of kids with way too much time and money on their hands... The teachers were very good though and there was NO tension between the races! Everyone got along. The school was like half hispanic (mostly upper class kids) a quarter anglo and a quarter black.

Miami Killian, when it was still outside and wonderfully breezy.
Happily, really good times!
I passed on PAVAC/Southwood "Fame"-type High School to be with my friends, even though I got in. That was a tough choice though!
Peace

Miami Military Academy Class of '73; was in the next-to-last class before it was sold and went condo. Faced with a declining enrollment due to the Viet Nam War and sitting on VERY valuable land on Biscayne Bay in Miami Shores, the owner sold it...sigh. The Quayside Condominiums now sit on the property
