The wife and I are staying in Miami Beach near the boardwalk and beach. We will be there 5 days. Is a car recommended?

I would. I'd wake up early and take a drive to Key West. You could also check out an airboat ride in the Everglades, or drive up to Disney World if thats your thing

If you're staying in south beach (south of 23 street) then a car is much less important, maybe even a bother to park. You can walk most places or take the 25c local bus. If you plan to visit off the island then a car is very useful, though you could rent it just for a day or two.

Im not in South Beach, but a little north. It is Mid Beach around 41st street. Good point though. I do want to go to Keywest for a day.

Car is more useful in mid-beach, but you can take the local bus for $2 on Collins Ave, or an inexpensive taxi, to get to south beach. If you plan to stay in Miami Beach most of the time you'll save money by renting the car only for the day or two you need it.

Unless you want to stay basically on Miami Beach and take a bus take a bus/cab or a bit of a walk but not bad to south beach you do not need it. You an also take a bus or cab to downtown. But if you want to see other parts of the area such as The Everglades, Biscayne National Park, other parts of Miami, the Keys, Key Biscayne etc.. You will want a car.

I would rent a car for 1 or 2 days, but not the entire time. It depends on what you want to see and do. The bus service at midbeach is fine for getting up and down the beach, downtown/bayside and connecting to Metrorail, and also Aventura Mall. Is parking free at the hotel? Another thing to consider.

Ok, how far is South Beach from where I am? Can I walk around the area, or is it too far?

Also, how bad is parking? The hotel does not have a parking lot. Can you buy a spot in a garage for a few days?

Like everyone else has said, if you want to see things in Miami are is needed. If you plan to stay at the beach only you can cab it to South Beach.

Key West isn't a day trip, it takes 4 hours to get there from Miami and that is with out any accidents on the two lane road. It's best to plan two nights there if you go. Even one night is rough, since its a long drive.

4 hours? I thought it was 2. Might just stay in Miami then.
