Newsweek released it's annual ranking of the best 100 High Schools in the nation and 3 of them are in Miami Dade. The schools that made the list are:

#12 : School for Advanced Studies
#58 : MAST Academy Senior
#69 : Coral Reef Senior High

The rankings aim to identy which high schools that have proven to be most effective in turning out college ready grads.
Only ten Florida high schools made the Top 100.

Newsweek also expanded it's rankings to include the 1,000 best High Schools in the nation and 7 more schools made the list in Miami Dade county:

#211 : Design & Architecture Senior High
#214 : New World School of the Arts
#567 : Doral Academy Preparatory
#568 : International Studies Charter High
#608 : Miami Palmetto Senior High
#727 : Doctors Charter Senior High
#844 : Mater Academy Senior High

There are 56 public high schools in Miami Dade county & 10 made it into the top 1000.
Newseek counted a total of 69 Florida High schools in it's Top 1000 list.
In our metropolitan area Broward & Palm Beach counties accounted for another 20 high schools on the list so this brings the total for the metro area to 30. That is nearly half the high schools in the state that made the Top 1000 list.
Who says we don't have good schools?

The only thing I see a problem with most of these schools is that they are magnet or charter schools, meaning your child has to win a lottery or be selected to attend. You just can't move next to the majority of these schools (like Palmetto Senior High) and expect your child will go there. It would be nice to see more regular neighborhood schools, like Miami High on this list.

Palmetto is the only true public school on that list. Being that its centrally located in the very affluent neighborhood of pinecrest doesnt hurt either.

The rest you either need to pay big bucks for, test incredibly well/interview to get into or get on a waiting list to be eligible to do my first two points.

Oh I completely agree. I just wish more schools would be at the level of many of these charter schools.

True! I know a couple folks who went to MAST and New World and lived in North Dade like me. Talk about a drive!

^^^Exactly, most families don't have the resources let alone the time to drive their child across the county sometimes to attend some of the schools.

Yeah I knew a lady that would take her son from Miami Gardens to the Northside metrorail station and have him take the rail down to New World in downtown. All this to avoid him going to Norland.

^^^I knew someone that did the same but from the south part of the county. Her mom drove her to the Dadeland Station and she went to New World.

doggie with all due respect I lived on the border of North Miami/Biscayne Park and I used the bus to get to my classes at MDCC North Campus on a mostly daily basis when I was going to college. We didn't have a car.
Where there is a will there is a way.
