Dude there are nice apartments walking distance from Jackson! The area is not nearly as bad as people think. If you go west yes it's pretty bad but the immediate area is not. he should give it a try. I know someone who rents a studio for 500 a month directly down the street from Jackson.

I live within walking distance of Jackson on the border between the Civic Center neighborhood and Allapattah. It is a nice building in a quiet area, a 5-minute walk directly west of Jackson Towers/Metrorail stop - very convenient. It is a newer building from 2008 with secure parking, gym, pool, etc. I actually think it is nicer than the 2 lofts I lived in (Wynwood and Margaret Pace). It is an interesting mixture of medical professionals, med students, and "others". It is not a party building as many medical professionals work crazy hours and like to sleep when they can.

I was laid off from Jackson last month, but rehired back as a consultant until August - with a possible extension until October. I walk to work pretty much everyday, and I drive the car on weekends.

This area along the boulevard on NW 14th Ave has 3 new condo buildings, one has just been finished, and they just put the for rent signs up, the other one is mostly rented (where I live), and a cool white one remains empty, with several delays in opening. You can walk to Riviera Supermarket/Bakery, Walgreens and a host of other shops, and it's a 5 minute drive to 2 different Winn Dixies. You don't need a car, but a bike would be pretty good (I have a bike and a car). It obviously is a Spanish speaking neighborhood - we call it Allapattah, many people are scared of it, but I love it (I speak Spanish). If you want out of the neighborhood, you can take the free trolley, or the metro rail. You can walk to Marlins games, etc. You can also walk to a very cool rag trade area on NW 20th, where you can buy decent quality clothes for great prices. I love this part.

For restaurants/bars etc., I prefer L.Hav. because my GF lives off of SW 8th, so we hang out there (as opposed to Brickell, which I used to like but no longer frequent). L.Hav. is an easy 5-min drive across the bridge, and parking is less of a hassle than Brickell. There are some very cool bohemian hangout spots on SW 8th, and NW 7th that won't break the bank, you just have to know where to go.

Another neighborhood that is within walking distance to the Jackson area is on the south side of the Jackson-UM campus. It is called Spring Garden, and I like this neighborhood a lot. You have several nice apartment buildings within a neighborhood of older Miami style homes with lush vegetation. You are also within walking distance to the metro, as well as the Winn-Dixie is pretty much across the street. There is more English spoken in this area.

Send me a message if you want to know more details.

Bottom line is that I am currently living in a beautiful finished 2 bedrooms/2 balconies, 1200 sqft, new building, great view on a high floor for the same price as a mediocre studio/1 BR in Brickell in a relatively walkable/bikeable neighborhood.

Allapattah is obviously not for everyone, as posters on this board are generally scared of the neighborhood. But it is a large neighborhood, and like anywhere there are good and bad areas.

Bring on the haters...

I do not have a problem with Allapatah. Some of my family live around there and Wynwood. Michael Di Meo how much are you paying for rent in that building?
