Miami-Dade Police on Tuesday identified the teen who was shot by an officer while they say he was carrying a metal bat in Kendall.
Sebastian Gregory, 16, was shot by the officer around 3:30 a.m. Monday in the area of Sunset Drive near Southwest 160th Avenue, police said.
Police say an officer who was conducting a routine check in his patrol car spotted Gregory walking in the area with what appeared to be a shiny metal object in his waistband.
When the officer confronted Gregory, he reached for the object and the officer opened fire, police said. The object was later identified as a baseball bat.
Gregory was taken to Kendall Regional Hospital, where he was listed in stable but critical condition.
Gregory's father told NBC 6 his son was hit with four bullets. His brother, Juan Gregory, said his brother isn't a hoodlum.
"The bat probably was for defense. He keeps a weapon for defense,” Juan Gregory said, adding that he doesn't know why his brother was out that late.
The shooting is still being investigated. Anyone with info is asked to call Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
The reputation of miami pd aside, this seems a little silly. There are ways to look innocent and there are ways to look suspicious. I would file walking around late at night with a metal bat under suspicious. If he was in an area that bad and had the mindset of an innocent person, police presence should be a good thing and one would act accordingly.
Walking around at 3:30am
Officer probably confronts the teen in a none agressive manner asking what he is doing why is he out at 3:30am. It is ILLEGAL for a 16 year old to be out at 3:30am so can't say the officer had no right to ask someone who looks young.
While officer ask him what he is doing after likely telling the teen he is a police officer or it being obvious with his POLICE CAR teen goes to pull something out of his waist band.
Hmmmm.. So you are a cop, you've seen people get shot, you been shot at before and you know people who have been killed doing exactLy this. For absolutely no reason suspicious teen goes into his waistband for some type of weapon it seems. What would you do?
Wait and hope that it isn't a gun? Hope that you will go home tonight?
What in the world is the cop suppose to do? Oh wait so even if it's a baseball bat the cop is suppose to hope that the kid doesn't try to slam his head with it. A bat is a deadly weapon if used as a weapon.
Please guys.. Cops have the right to protect themselves. No reason to pull a shiny metal object out of your waistband at night with a cop in a police car confronting you. That is just plain stupid.
Also this was MDPD. I have not had much problems with the vast majority of police shootings down here but Miami PD has made some questionable decisions in recent times. I can't remember MDPD having this, they are a very good agency. Even the criminals know not to mess with the green and white cars.

Who is to say he ACTUALLY attacked the cop?
And, aren't cops supposed to to use other non lethal weapons in these situations?
4 bullets to stop an 16 year old who at the time had no pistol or gun?

No one said he attacked the cop! Where did you get that from? When did I say that?
He pulled a deadly weapon out of his waistband at night and it could have easily been anything from a loaded gun to a knife or baseball bat. All three if used against a police officer or any citizen can have deadly force repeated back for self defense. You think if someone pulled a baseball bat out on me and I had a gun I wouldn't use it because the weapons aren't "fair" or something?
What other method can the cop use? Not all cops have tasers even if this officer did I am not sure if it is the right move to make, dark and no idea if it is a gun or not. Besides for taser which I do not think is really that great in this situation there is no other way for the officer to protect himself even if it was identified as a baseball bat AND IF the teen went after the officer.
Assuming the teen did not go after the officer which seems to be the case it was obvious that the officers training kicked in, shiny object+waistband+suddenly taken out is more often than not something that won't be good like a knife or gun.
One side says he was asked to show his hands, the other said he was already on the ground. IMO if the teen went for the bat in either situation. The cop firing is reasonable.
But who knows. Not enoug details out yet but as everyone is quick to pull the trigger on the cops shooting people bandwagon I will at least supply another perspective.

What if the cop created this "waistband" thing to tilt the story to his favor? What if the kid was carrying the baseball bat out in the open all along?
Let's look at it this way:
Kid walking with a baseball bat out in the open, then suddenly a cop stops him.
COP: To the ground!
kid: (scared and shocked) Why... what did I do?
COP: I say to the ground or I shoot
kid: raising his hands out of confusion, but sadly still carrying the baseball bat
COP: Cop sees it as an attack move.
Cop shoots 4 times.
4 times?

None of the stories from either side says anything like this happened but if that is the case then the cop was wrong and should be charged. But we can't sit hear making up stories. If the cop was wrong it will come out. If the cop was right everything will just go along as normal. It's only news when the cops messes up because it is a fairly rare occurrence.
