Moving to Miami in 6 weeks. Where could a frugal family live?! (Miami Beach: to buy, costs)

You're right about the location of Aventura, if he stays east of US-1. You can stay west, where I live, and it is much more affordable. There a quite a few apartment buildings on or around Miami Gardens Dr between US-1 and I-95, especially around 18th to 14th. OP might also be lucky and find an affordable house in that zone, as well, especially south of Miami Gardens Dr and west of the park.

But one thing is clear: Living close to Key Biscayne, without either paying out the nose or living in near poverty, is near impossible.

That would be further away than a 20 minute drive from Key Biscayne (ZIP CODE 33149).

Thanks for all your comments. I have decided that NMB would be the place for me to start at (near NE 167th and NE 22nd Ave). Prices are reasonable enough and I distance to and from work is within my range.

Rush hour should not be an issue in Miami, as the farthest you can be from Key Biscayne in the Miami area is around 25 miles. If you travel at a constant rate of 30 mph during rush hour using side roads, then the maximum amount of time it will take to get to Key Biscayne is 50 minutes MAXIMUM.

That's what side streets are for, all side streets that I've seen in Miami have a 30 mph or above speed limit, problem solved.

If you live south of Miami Gardens Drive you won't be able to use those lanes. They are for Broward commuters. If you get on I-95 before 6:45am you should not experience much traffic going south but it will take you about 30 minutes to get to Key Biscayne at least unless you drive much faster than the speed limit.
