It has always seemed like such a great place when I visit, but, based on the threads here, it doesnt seem to have the best reputation. I was just wondering if it was localized or pretty much the whole area is unsafe.

MOST of Coconut Grove is fine, it's a nice area. Some very nice neighborhoods with great old Miami homes. Alsomitmhas a nice bar/restaurant area too.

Most of the Grove is pretty safe, its not as safe as some other areas however. The western part of the grove is typically the problem area, so just avoid living within a few blocks of there and you should be fine.

Let me translate into past century English. There's a dangerous black ghetto in Coconut Grove. Way back, before crack, they lived content and happily pushing nickelbacks, ludes and cut perico or selling parking space to rich students and well off kids. Now, "angry kids" are all over the place, they can be found in malls, kicking the s.h.i.t out of benevolent h.o.n.k.e.y kids riding expensive byclicles or skates, etc. As to the current situation, I don't know, depends on politics, but they have been trying to solve the issue during the last century.

First of all what is your definition of safe because in Miami there are no safe neighborhoods, any thing can happen anywhere at anytime. Where ever you go just be on your guard and don't take anything for granted. By no means walk alone in the Grove especially at night. If you stay around mainstreet and S bayshore dr you should be good to go. The further west you go on Grant ave the more dangerous it is. I've had a few run ins around those parts myself and people I know.

I have a 16 year old daughter that will most likely be living with me. I don't want her to feel unsafe. I would love to live "intown" for a change, but I am not sure if i am willing to risk her safety. I was considering Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay, but I know the commute would be long. A friend of mine has suggested Sunny Isles Beach as a safe place, but I am not sure about the schools up there.

Family wise Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay are better than Sunny Isles Beach. Sunny Isle Beach is more for young couples and single people.
