That area is pretty much just a ghetto. They do have some shootting/drug incidences in this area too.
As far as other areas to avoid (I am sure I have forgotten some other):
Opa Locka
Hialeah
Goulds
Parts of Cutler Bay aka Cutler Ridge
Parts of Coconut Grove
Parts of Perrine
Parts of Florida City
parts of Homestead
Liberty City
Allapattah
Brownsville
Carol City
Sweetwater (just because this area is always on the news with flooding issues)
Goulds
Howard
South Miami Heights
Leisure City
Little Haiti
Medley

Like most have said, the cop was just looking out for you and your family. Instead of asking what places to avoid, which are far too many, you should ask what places you could go to. It is a much shorter list!!

If you are young and single, the best place is South Beach. Just because this is where all the action is. You will kick yourself for living west like in Kendall or Weston if you like to go out. So stay east of I-95. As a young person South Beach is it, you can walk to restaurants, bars, clubs, grocery stores, shops, etc. But Coconut Grove if you live on the otherside closer to Kennedy Park. Brickell, Key Biscayne, Brickell Key, I would avoid downtown, the area just isn't there yet.

That sounds about right. I was expecting a nice downtown and then a beach whenever I need to, but i guess Miami doesn't really have a nice downtown yet right?

anyway, what i'm trying to see if this area is a normal ghetto or a warzone in disguise? and any other really bad areas i should avoid in Miami (i heard opa locka is a no go area)

Haha! Yeah truthfully I have seen ghettos in Connecticut that rival anywhere in Miami as for being true "war zones"... and could probably claw my way out of any of 'em....still.... common sense would suggest steering away from areas such as the above mentioned unless your looking for a problem. Hell, to be honest, the shopping in coconut grove sucked when I lived there anyway. Just a bunch of chain stores...expensive, dull, chain stores that you find in Everycity, USA.

i hate how when people who have never been in a miami ghetto assume it's all fun and games because they've seen ghettos where they live. come to little haiti and visit and i guarantee you'll be acting differently.
while you got a few f#ck the system white boys in connecticut (which i've been to, btw) with a glock or two we got goons down here with ak 47's and macs pulling in 6 digit figures.

I lived in the "edgewater" (I think that is what it is called) neighborhood on the upper east side....loved it...it was more low key and cost a whole lot less than south beach, yet only minutes away from downtown, brickell, south beach, etc...5 years ago I think I paid under $500.00 per month in rent for a big apartment...and I could see Biscayne Bay from my front porch...of course...when I was in Miami a year ago I found that my old building has since been destroyed and replaced by a lux high rise, so.....yeah it might be a bit more pricey these days

Yeah...um....I did live in Miami...AND I lived in Connecticut...AND a whole lot of other places as well....L.A....NYC.....so if you don't belive me about some of the hoods in CT...let me take you on a tour of the darker streets of Hartford...New Haven....Bridgeport....
Do a google search, or possibly use this website to research crime and poverty in Hartford....it is a regular on the poorest and most violent lists. From the 11th annual Morgan Quitno "most dangerous cities" list, Hartford, Connecticut is the seventh ( 7th ) most dangerous city in the nation, while Miami is number 19...even less dangerous than Tampa, FL, coming in at number 15. Miami just has the biggest ego

i've been to both hartford and new haven, as i used to live in lawrence, ma. of course if i do a SEARCH for it i'll find it, that's like saying "if you search for teens on google you'll find some 19 year old with her ass out." duh. if you live in a dangerous area you don't need wikipedia or morgan quitno to verify anything for you. sure, you can drive me by, but have you lived in those areas? i am willing to bet you haven't.
your bottom paragraph is just pure bull sh*t. i just did a two second search (on this site, keep in mind) and it already showed miami's crime stats are higher than tampas.
i seriously believe people in this website try to make their areas sound overly dangerous as an attempt to try and fit the "hood" lifestyle. while hartford (as you say, probably a lie to) is the seventh, opa-locka was the most dangerous period in 03 and 04.
another thing to keep in mind - the chief for the miami police department is currently under investigation i believe for skewing with the cities crime stats. good looking.
