I've read the threads, but should i really be concerned? I already deal with traffic, high cost of living, and a job I hate.

I know you need more info than that, so I'll follow up with more specific questions. I'm not a fan of DC and no one speaks English where I live, anyway. I'm assuming crime isn't rampant in the "right" areas. I would be working in Doral, but I want to be closer to the beach, so a commute isn't something I'm looking forward to after 4.5 years of driving two miles to work. The traffic can't be as bad as DC, but how long does it really take to travel from Miami to Doral in rush hour?

Tarvas, I am from NOVA and own a condo in South Beach. Miami to Doral, going against traffic. Depends on where you live in Miami. 25-40 mins. Other then Memorial weekend, crime is exagerated in most of the city.

Agreed. It is easier to get yourself in a bad area in DC then it is in Miami. Crime isn't horrible and it pretty much stays in its areas for the most part. I spent four years in DCA and loved it. DC is a fantastic city but I was living in the middle of the city not NOVA.

First thing first, do you have a job?? In Miami lined up? No one IMO should move here without a job lined up.

As for your drive it won't be bad, if you can afford to live in downtown area or Miami beach I can't see that drive taking more than 30mins if not less if you leave home early enough.

Depends where in Nova you've lived. Most parts of Doral are not walkable, there's little to no public transportation. Not sure if that matters to you all all. Doral can be great, but more of a clean suburb (you may be looking for that). It's certainly not hip and happening. Still, if you don't mind driving, you've got great stuff all around you. And yes, you would be doing a reverse commute, which make for a fast, smooth drive.

Thanks. I'm thinking Brickell or Downtown. Miami Beach seems interesting, but how much time does crossing the bay add to a commute?

Having never been to the area, I don't understand why Miami Beach seems cheaper than Brickell...? Is it just parking and amenities?

A lot of the smaller buildings in Miami Beach don't have parking and zero amenities. Also be aware that there are areas of Miami Beach that are by no means dangerous at all but not the nicest in the type of buildings. There are some lower income areas of Miami Beach. Miami Beach is not all south beach. Brickell for the most part is all new, high income, young professionals. Depending where in Miami Beach you are is how much extra time but traffic crossing the bay on the bridges is usually not bad at all. I would say 5-10mins more added than living in Brickell.

Which part of MB are you talking? Oceanfront in a newer high rise with amenities will be at least as much as Brickell. But Miami Beach is a much larger place with several distinct neighbourhoods, while Brickell is just a few blocks of basically all luxury high rises. IMO, Miami Beach is more genuinely urban.

I don't think it's so much parking as amenities and the hype of the real estate market. Off street parking with a decent 1/1 on the Beach will start around $1100, but those buildings are older and don't have amenities.

You should really visit Miami before you commit completely.

I will be visiting within the next week and will go to the proposed neighborhoods, but I'm open to other destinations anyone thinks might give me some more insight into the city and day to day life there.
