Today the Dade herItage trust is deciding wether to give the miami herald building historic status. If granted that status, then the Genting resorts casino will be a no go, and the building stays put. What do you fellow miamians think

Gentling has plans to demolish it and increase access to the bayfront. I really don't see anything architecturally special about that building plus the ghost of Commissioner Art Teele will probably haunt that building forever! Demolish it.

I heard it was one of the first buildings in Miami to use Googie elements on its design... I think that shouldn't be overlooked. Isn't there a middle ground? Can't they build the Genting Casino on top of/around it?

Or at least demolish the building, but not the entrance....?

But if the decision is in black and white, then... I call for demolition.

WINTER? why would you want to save the entrance? That is where Art Teele shot himself! How ghoulish!

The entrance is perhaps the most iconic element of the building... maybe if preservationists fight to keep just the entrance, then Genting could see a way to ask developers to put it into use for other purposes. That way they can work with historic pieces but in a modern context.

The rest of the building is useless... and energy consuming. How is this new development addressing the issues of sustainability? I really don't know much about the project only that it looks like an awful ostrich.

If they did this it would probably get into a legal dispute as gentings plans are very well know and they are planning on getting rid of the building. They have already made investments and plans for the building. Honestly I think it is too late to put historic protections on it.

I say get rid of it for something better. If we knock down the Everglades hotel might as well get rid of this. The property is just way too valuable but I do think we need to start protecting more older buildings downtown.
