Absolutely ridiculous, IMO. As this guy says- it's just a big box!

Quote:
Design-wise, said University of Miami architecture professor Jean-Francois LeJeune, he finds the building to be a “big box’’ in spite of some indisputably good elements, including the futuristic, soaring porte-cochere entryway and the metallic screens over the windows that are typical of MiMo.

The city of Miami’s historic preservation office has compiled a lengthy, detailed report that substantially bolsters the case for designation of The Miami Herald’s “monumental’’ bayfront building as a protected landmark based on both its architectural merits and its historic significance.

Somewhat unusually, the 40-page report by city preservation officer Megan McLaughlin, which is supplemented by 30 pages of bibliography, plans and photographs, carries no explicit recommendation to the city’s preservation board, which is scheduled to decide the matter on Monday.

The portico is the only thing that might be worth preserving. The rest of the building is rather plain and common for the era in which the building was built. It doesn't necessarily have to be knocked down it could be significantly altered or added to.

In my opinion making it an historic building now would be a 5th/14th amendment taking of property. It is widely known why the property was purchased. The plans for the property have been in place for a whiles now and are also widely known. The the people who own the property have put tens of millions into making it what they want and that includes tearing down the building. I just don't see how making it a historical building after the fact that there are plans to tear it down will be legal.

To make matters worse it is not in an "historic" area or protected area of town. It really would seem like a targeted taking also because one of the reasons people want to protect the herald building is to keep the large hotel complex out. Even if it is protected Genting will take that decision to court and win.

Beside its a stupid ugly building. Too good of a spot to have such a large ugly building housing a sub-par newspaper waste the space.

Give me hotels, convention center space and much much more over that.

I agree, but how many more hotels and convention centers are we going to have. I just don't see the demand.

Agreed. If the Herald were still operating there with no intention of leaving and the land hadn't been sold they would not be in a rush to "protect" the building.

True, but the building then would not be in jeopardy of being demolished.

It's a functionally obsolete building once the Herald moves out. Genting has plans to open up the space and make it a public walkway once the building is demolished. The Herald building may have history but it is a very ugly structure that walls of the bay.

But if any building is of such historical significance they shouldn't be waiting until it's on the chopping block to spring into action.

^^ I agree. There are obviously other reasons behind this action.
