I will have to agree if your job is in Coral Springs you really shouldn't even consider any place in Miami. You will be kicking yourself after a year doing that commute. Ft. Lauderdale is a good suggestion especially since your only going to be here for 18 months. You could also look even closer at Boca Raton. Boca is a good location because it puts you in between Clematis Street in Palm Beach and Las Olas in Ft. Lauderdale for nightlife.

Rule out living in Coral Springs, Parkland, Weston like that other guy said.... everything west of 1-95... espicially if your single....as for Broward Beaches, you got to choose carefully, for examplle Galt Mile is Senior Citizen territory. Obviously Ft. lAuderdale Beach and las Olas r desirable, but relativley expensive. Some parts of northern lauderdale beach like LAderdale by the sea and Lauderdale Beach r nice....Maybe even consider Pompano beach (beach)...then when you feel like partying at night just go down A1A

But it has been "up and coming" for the past 20 years.

Just use Google street view and you will see what I'm talking about. I go there often and something is just not right about that place. It certainly doesn't feel like it's 90% occupied, maybe they are counting those South American Investors who spend a few months of the year there. The city is not well designed, it's not Europe, Portland or NYC walkable, it's more like the affluent areas of São Paulo, Bogota and Caracas. I can see why the average hispter or urban american would not be attracted to that place. At least in the beach areas you have the beach.
