Single females visiting Miami
I am taking my daughter down to Miami for the Jets/Dolphins game in November. The El Palacio Hotel in Miami is 7 blocks from the stadium and would be convenient. Does anyone know anything about this hotel? Is it an area that would be safe enough for two females to stay? Would we be better off staying in the Ft. Lauderdale vicinity and driving down to the game? We are flying into Ft. Lauderdale. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Well, I have heard that the El Palacio is a dump, and it doesn't help that it's in Opa Locka (like the stadium), which is pretty much one of the most dangerous areas of Miami. The El Palacio hotel basically sits at the Broward County line so it's really in the Fort Lauderdale and Miami vicinity. The neighborhoods on both sides of the county line are not safe.
If you are looking for a very safe and inexpensive area to stay in, the Pembroke Pines area could be a good bet, out towards I-75. It is basically like staying in the suburbs of any other U.S city out that way.

I agree with the other posters avoid El Palacio. I would suggest staying on Ft. Lauderdale Beach or Hollywood Beach and driving to the stadium or catching a cab to the stadium (but make sure you can catch a cab back from the stadium). But you could stay in South Beach also if your daughter is over 21. If you do go to South Beach stay south of 20th Street.

I went down there on business in March and had the displeasure of staying in the El Palacio in Fort Lauderdale off of commercial (they bought the rooms and the flight so I didn't know of this place). I had to change rooms because the room smelled like fungi pores were in the carpet. And by Fort Lauderdale standards the neighborhood isn't safe, but I have to admit people in South Florida don't really know how safe the region is compared to parts of Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, Los Angeles, and New York.
I recommend staying somewhere along A1A, I've found the Yankee Clipper to be quite enjoyable and at a great location.
Good Luck

I don't need to go to chicago or detroit or wherever the armpit of the nation is to know you can do alot better than "El Palacio". It's a dump, it's probably safe and nothing will happen to you. But why would you stay there when there are a thousand hotels in this town that are upscale and in a much better part of town.
