Valentina, my brother finally found a nice job in DC and he's moving the next week. We'll finally end up moving after him if we don't find a house and decent jobs in Miami too. I was wondering if you could give me some advice about DC. thank you

What kind of advice you looking for? I lived for a while in the DC area.

What type of advice are you looking for? I may not be the best to ask because I hate DC and I am ready to move. I would advise you to not come here. It is VERY VERY expensive to live here, even in the burbs and contrary to popular belief the jobs are not plentiful and they don't pay all that much, especially with the cost of living in DC being so high. It's also quite boring. People will talk about museums and such, but that gets old very quickly. The residents are not that friendly and it's mostly about your job title here; people will ask you what you do before they find out your name, not exaggerating about that at all.

Trust me, unless you are a lobbyist, lawyer, or someone that wants to work in a nonprofit for very little pay, I would say stay where you are or look at someplace other than the DMV. It's not all that people make it out to be.

Also people will state what their education level is within five minutes of any conversation, then create their impression of you by your education, which they expect you will also state.

Why don't you try Houston? There beach isn't the greatest, (Galveston)...But at least you have much warmer weather, a much stronger Economy being in metro Houston, and TX in general... I also got some what of a tropic vibe with the palm trees they have down there. Would be a good medium in between?....

Someone else mentioned Houston and I'm going to do some research. I still hope to make Miami my home one day.

Houston offers warm temperatures year round and relative proximity to a gulf beach.

Both Florida and Texas are no state income tax states.

If you are really determined to make Miami your home one day, then the main reason must be both warm temperatures year round and right near an ocean beach, and no other main reason: those are the only two major factors that set Miami apart from other major US cities (and of course its business focus on trade/investment involving Latin America: apparently you are ruling out Broward and Palm Beach counties).

The rest is the more or less the same in any major city: superficial people, high cost of living, traffic, spotty public transportation (few exceptions in US), crime, etc.

Your biggest obstacle will be landing a job that pays a living wage. It will also be helpful if you are flexible on the car issue (which would also open up Broward and Palm Beach counties, broadening the job prospects a bit, and, overall, they may offer a better beach environment).

Good Luck!

Thank you. I am using Miami in a broad manner. I have no problem with Broward or Palm Beach counties; I'm also considering purchasing a car, but everyone has lamented so about how bad the job market is and I would def need to be making good money to add on the expenses of a car in additional to my basic living needs.

I think one of the other differences between Houston and Miami are the different cultures. Please correct me if I am wrong but I don't think there is a heavy West Indian influence in H-town as compared to Miami?

On balance, the cost of living can be around 10% less in Broward and Palm Beach counties, especially in terms of car and health insurance. I personally also think that those two counties offer a wider swathe of accessible ocean beach, some of which are not too crowded even at peak times once you know the ins and outs of a particular area (e.g. in Delray Beach, Linton Blvd less busy than Atlantic Blvd).

No idea about West Indian influence in Houston, and based on the little that I do know about the greater Miami area I can add that there is some presence in Broward County.
