Miami law school
I just got accepted to U of Miami, and I was quite excited to attend, but after reading these posts it makes me rather uneasy. Is any place in Miami nice that a law student would be able to afford? Commuting is not a huge issue as I live in Los Angeles and am VERY use to traffic. I just want a relativly safe area.

First congrats on getting accepted, but I am sorry you have to move to Miami. But its only for a few years, thats the bright side for ya. Not sure what your rental price range is, but try these areas Miami Beach, Brickell, Coconut Grove (but stay away from West Coconut Grove not safe), Coral Gables, East Kendall, South Miami (east of US1), Pinecrest and Key Biscayne.

I'm not sure which law school you got accepted to, but I just started grad school at University of Miami this fall. I love the school, but don't like the city much. If you're attending University of Miami, I would recommend Coral Gables (although expensive) or East Kendall. South Beach is nice, but traffic can be a problem because U.S. 1 is the only north-south route.

There used to be an affordable area just west of the University. The bad thing is that a high crime area is very close by. The area between 57Ave, 62Ave between Miller and 64st may still have some deals, but beware of the area between 64 st and US-1 is pretty bad. University of Miami is accessible by MetroRail and you could live by any station and get there fast, perhaps some of those Dadeland condos that will eventually need tenants. As long as you can afford the high tuition, I think that you will enjoy "suntan U".

To combine the posts from doggiebus and tallrick, look for an apartment and/or roommate in Brickell/Roads (33129), eastern Coconut Grove (33133), Coral Gables itself (33134 and 33146), South Miami & Dadeland (east Kendall, 33143). The metrorail basically runs through these areas, though be careful about immediate neighborhood. Rent is expensive, but probably not so compared to Los Angeles.
I really don't understand statements like, 'commute doesn't matter I am used to a lot of traffic'. To me it seems analogous to saying, I am used to hell, so I might as well stay in hell. Maybe someone can explain it to me.

I have a friend attending UM law school. He ended up renting a "carriage house/cottage" type apartment attached to a larger home in a nice area (don't know the exact area though), and he loves it. Last I heard he was paying around 700 something/month. Might be something to look into.

Good suggestions for areas. I would try to stay around South Miami or Dadeland where you can pick up the metrorail (be within walking distance). These are nice areas to hang out in also. You'll need a car to get most anywhere else not serviced by the metrorail or during off hours, so make sure you get a place that has parking. You can get something close to UM and just drive. You'll get a parking permit for campus parking.
There are beautiful homes in the Gables and South Miami that have these "guest houses" for rent, at more reasonable prices and less "city" life.
It all depends on your budget and lifestyle choices but GO CANES! :-))
