I am 49 and hubby 54 so our goal is to build as much as we can towards paying off the house and having retirement. So we do NOT dip into what ever I make which on bad years it can be as low at 30k on a good year it could be over six figures. We also do not live the south Florida "lifestyle" and could care less for any bling.

If you have young kids there is a lot more expense but it can be done.
Cubanchic - can you tell me what health insurance you're on and the plan? PM me if you'd prefer. That sounds like a great rate. I'm only a couple of years older than you so it shouldn't be too different. I have a BCBS plan right now and its a lot more. Why can't your hubby put you on his plan? The health insurance situation in this country and medical/pharmaceutical for that matter too, is becoming very scary to me. It's sad to see that what should be the art of healing has become a get rich business.

We are on Coventry which has been great! Btw once I turn 50 everything is a lot higher! I almost laughed because we are so similar family wise we take out big deductibles because we are both health nuts and work out. Yes we have family history of medical problems but we both work at helping those issues thus the high deductible with a savings back out.

My major concern would be a accident or something that develops where we can't control. Hubby could put me on county plan but it would be family and that is 440 a month. He doesn't get to choose spouse.

Btw we got a discounted rate thru AARP for Coventry and that was awesome, maybe look into them and that might help.
