I grew up here and I live in a good area, and crime is getting worse. I live in East Kendall and we have had a crime spree of home burglaries and auto burglaries the last year. The news is saying Palmetto Bay another good safe area is having a crime wave. I am sure other areas are having similar problems. If you know where you will be living you can go to this website Miami-Dade County - My Neighborhood and highlight the area and you can see the crime that has happened for the last month and a half (it takes a week for crimes to be posted and they stay up for a month and a half).

I work for comcast so I have a good job and will be moving to Miami alone. all I really want to know is if crime is really all that bad in Miami (random) or is it that people who did not grow up in these kind of environments over reacting to crime situations that "normally" go down in the "hood".

Calm down man. This guy is just saying that he lived in the inner city. Inner cities exist everywhere and it's not like hes saying it has to be better down south, but hes used to it.

And yes, New Haven has a very high crime rate, as high as Miami.

Most comments on this board are for people relcoating from middle class or affluent areas. They expect the same standard of living here despite much higher prices. The warnings come when people think paying 400K for a house will buy them a tropical style home in a nice area. Wrong!

So, if you are from the ghetto, then yes, you will like North Miami. It is basically a tropical version of where it sounds like you are living now. I dated someone from North Miami and it isn't a great area, nor would I want to live there, but if you are street smart and don't mind people stepping up to you, staring you down, the ghetto mentality, thug wannabees, then yes, you will be fine. Many people live there and just ignore that kind of stuff.

I don't think you will have any problems, but come and visit first just to make sure it is for you.

The true MEAN ghettos are Opa Locka and Liberty City. Then you have areas like North Miami that are old suburbs that went downhill because of proximity to the real ghettos and affordable housing. It is really a lower middle income area with lower class people (behavior wise). But this is more true in the rentals or cheap condo conversions...and areas west of I-95.

Never thought I say this but in this instance I kind of agree with Thaspecial
I grew up in Colchester CT, not far from New Haven and have been there quite a bit and I believe I know what the OP is saying about "inner city" and the "hood" and such, but Miami and all of South Florida's "Inner Cities and Hoods" are different. I wish I could describe it better but I'll give it a shot.
In CT the "bad" places and activities that go along with those (I know, stereotyping a bit here but go with it a minute) you could spot a block or so away, not the case in S. FL. I thought I was somewhat "street smart" (well as much as a country gal can be) but it took me quite a while to recognize when I hit a "bad" section of town in S. FL. There were several places that "looked" like a nice area in Miami, but if I looked a little bit closer than an over all look, I was floored! I would think "Geesh, the buildings and streets look like they fit in a nice, safe area, but was not case. All I am saying is that yes, New Haven has it's really rough spots that are best to avoid, and so does Miami but the look and feel is different and you might have to adjust your inner radar a bit. Make any sense?

Actually I agree. Although personally most of Miami looks ghetto to me between the bars on the windows on those nice buldings and I have got good at scoping out that "feel" here, then again I'm a semi-native, but it's a different feel for sure, and to an outsider or newcomer it may not be perceived as "bad". My main thing was that I think thaspecial interpreted him (OP) as having a "oh, I'm from the NE so I'm bad" attitude.

But it could be said there aren't any nice areas in South FL. None .

But it's true, when you first get down here, it can be hard to tell. However after a while you start noticing some differences. Miami's (all of South FL really) crappy areas here have a cluttered, crowded look to them, bars on windows are common, smaller older bland concrete block homes in iffy shape are some characteristics. The "good" areas tend to look like other new suburbs in other cities.

I said what i said because i lived in Carol City in Miami before and grew up around alot of thugz and drugs when i was in highschool down there....but even though i had those "street smarts" down there...it didn't mean a dam thing when i moved to Nashville or here in Orlando because its all about who you know when you are in a bad part of town....North Miami was a community with alot of Black people if i remember correctly and if this guy from CT....isn't knowlegable on how southern blacks can be then it might not be the same as up where he lives in the ghetto up there....there are different things that are found as being disrespectfull in the South and North as far as ghettos so some things he will have to learn the hard way as i would have to learn if i moved to a ghetto area up there

Thats not true. I was born and raised in New Jersey and have seen my fair share of ghettos in that state but parts of Opa Locka and Liberty City seemed more dangerous and poor.

Florida is awful, your either rich or poor a gang banger or a yuppy idiot or a hick.
I see VERY FEW normal people around here.

Very much looking forward to leaving this hell.

Hey the weather is warm just like hell!
