I know that Miramar has a large middle class black population. But just move to any middle class city, no matter where you go there will be black people (not sure about Cooper City or Davie though).

In Palm Beach County there is a huge black population in Boynton Beach, both middle class and lower class. West Palm Beach has large black population as well, but with your job you'd want to move to the unincorporated part which is also racially diverse.

Default South Florida Code

When giving directions in South Florida , you should always start with the words, Take I-95 to. . .

If you're a snowbird or a non-working retiree, you absolutely cannot drive between the hours of 6am and 10am and 4pm and 7pm. This is considered to be rush hour and you're not in any rush. No exceptions.

Some roads just stop for no reason and then start again: Congress Avenue, Lyons Road, Jog Road. Freeways can only go North and South? Not east and west.

A1A and ALT A1A are the same streets.

Traffic Lights aren't timed and never will be.

You know how to drive 80 mph and you know how to drive in bumper to bumper traffic? Now do both at the same time.

We measure the distance you travel in time not miles.

If you travel more than 15-20 miles on any road in South Florida without seeing an orange Bob's Barricade, you're not in Florida . You're lost!

I-95 is a parking lot not a freeway.

When your body height becomes 4 inches below the steering wheel get acquainted with Palm Tran train.

If you miss your exit on I-95, its perfectly acceptable to back up.

Once the light turns green, only 3 cars can go through the intersection.

Flip flops, tank tops and baggy shorts are also known as business casual.

Your blinker means nothing.

English is our second language.

It is perfectly acceptable to brag about the size of your generator.

It is totally acceptable to be living in South Florida but not root for The Dolphins, The Marlins, The Heat or The Panthers.

We have alligators here in South Florida and they WILL bite you. Don't be stupid and try to feed or pet one.

Clematis is a street not a disease.

When a hurricane is headed our way, even though you have advanced warning and you are told to be prepared, you're not a true Floridian unless you wait until the absolute last minute to go to Home Depot to pick up plywood or to Publix to stock up water, ice, beer, and potato chips.

Northlake Blvd and Okeechobee Blvd are where you buy a car.

You know how to spell Okeechobee.

Do NOT buy a boat. Make friends with someone who already owns a boat. That way you don't have to deal with the headaches.

There is an Okeechobee Blvd, Street, Avenue, a town, a lake and a county.

You weren't born here. If you were, you're angry that everyone else moved here.

There's always a Walgreens across the street from a CVS on almost every corner - with more being built every day.

There are three things you will need to survive a south Florida winter: A long sleeved T-shirt, sunscreen and restaurant reservations that you make at least three week s in advance.

The same neighbor who smiles at you every day will be the first one to rat you out if your are violating water restrictions.

It's normal to sweat when you are putting up your holiday decorations.

I found an intriguing - albeit 10 year old - article about white non-Hispanics who moved out of Miami to Broward county to cities like Weston:

washingtonpost.com: Myth of the Melting Pot: America's Racial and Ethnic Divides

It's interesting how now many immigrants are now moving out of Dade to the areas mentioned in the article.

Oh, and Fort Lauderdale Mermaid, some of those things are indeed true, lol.

Fast forward 10 years and it's amazing how much the scene changed here 10 years later. Weston is now the most Hispanic city in Broward County at a little over 40% of the population. But these aren't immigrants moving in. These are mostly "refugees" from Dade County simply escaping the other social problems there, read the second to last paragraph and fast forward 10 years. Recently it's been called "congestion flight" by the Miami Herald (wish I could find the article, I will search for it). Very intriguing and well written article, except they failed to acknowledge there is little Cuban population here.

Has anyone checked out RottenNeighbor.com? It's funny how most of the reports are in wealthier areas

PBCboy, I just checked it out. That's the strangest site I've ever visited, made me want to look up my address to see whom I've pissed off.

Default Can not figure this out.

Hello Compelled.

I've been reading and I guess i'm just a little slow. I can't figure out how to start a new thread.

I'm possibly moving to Miami to work for the cruise lines, so the job would be at the Miami Cruise pier.

Where is a good area for a family including one in High school and one in Elementary?

I'm willing to commute maybe up to 40 mins. Would like to keep budget at about $350 to $375.

I don't know the counties, I don't have that detailed of a map yet. Any help would be great.

Thanks!

350 to 375 by the cruise pier...40 minutes...

That's going to be a tough one. The only area that really has all around "good" public schools within 40 minutes is Pinecrest, but that's very expensive. Would you be willing to do private for your elementary schoolers? If you could, Miami Shores has a great charter high school and if you stay east of US1, there are charming, tree lined older neighborhoods with a sense of community. It's more affordable than other pretty looking areas like Pinecrest and Coral Gables.

Or, you could commute with the masses from SW Broward County (Cooper City area would be my top pick, but Weston, west Pines and Davie has some good places as well), which can be 45 minutes on a good day, but can get as long as an hour and a half.

Thank you so much for the quick reply! I'm from LA so while I don't relish the commute I'm willing to "suffer it" for the family in my little convertable.
