not completely true. while you are correct that most of miami proper is downright horrible there are areas that are not bad and still within official city limit.
the difference here is i have found people here who can point out a few dirty diamonds in the rough figuratively speaking that are within city limits and i personally know some who are living there now. i've been to those people's houses and areas day and night and have seen its ok
i have yet to meet someone from detroit or lived in detroit that can give the same information.
the distinction is some people who have lived in miami have said miami is worse than detroit but i'm going to point out now they didnt say it was good either, which worse than miami, because while you have those who point out how bad miami is, you also have people pointing out areas in miami (proper) that are good. detroit...ah...not so much.
before you really made some good points about how bad miami is, but now your really beating a dead cat. miami's biggest problem generating hype for those who have come and gone is, miami is a city that requires research to move in. you cant just plop your happy ass down away from the core and expect it to be nice because its away from downtown or has a high price tag. this doesnt work here, almost every other major metropolis in the united states it does work. most cities the urban blight lessens the further you are from the downtown area or at least when you distance yourself from the ghetto not here. here once you've distanced yourself from one ghetto you will find yourself in another one. so people move into a not so nice area unsuspectingly and get the shock of their life when **** hits the fan then when they leave they blast miami which of course when your not expecting something its going to feel worse than it really was. i dont know what happened to you but if you notice there arent so many other people from miami that are trying so hard to 'rep' the dangerous ghetto life as you.
lastly having miami being ranked the poorest big city in the US while being a shameful ranking is not a permenant tag or makes it worse. i'm from cleveland and not long ago we recieved the same rating not to mention new orleans has had the same rating as well, so lets not blast a city over such a stupid rating its like the mvp award someone new typically gets it the next year its not yours forever

Its true about Detroit, I have a sister that has lived there for years. Most of the city seems to be abondoned, run down and just scary. But far out in the sprawling suburbs there are beautiful kinda repetitive dull neighborhoods with huge McMansions and people complitating Detroits better days.

I am from Detroit originally and I notice some similarities to Miami, visually, just driving down the streets. Both have a lot of "urban decay". Detroit is substantially worse though. Entire neighborhoods that are abandoned and boarded up. Actually mother nature has sprung back to life in many parts of the city. Trees are starting to grow through abandoned buildings, etc. Nature is reclaiming the city! Unemployment 15%, total horrorshow. In some areas the modern economy has broken down and given way to a sharecropper-like system.

The Fair White Goddess of Cities
The Miami Daily News, one day in the summer of 1925, printed an issue of 504 pages, the largest in newspaper history....
Miami was not only "The Wonder City," it was also "The Fair White Goddess of Cities."
. . ."GO TO FLORIDA--
--WHERE ENTERPRISE IS ENTHRONED--
"Where you sit and watch at twilight the fronds of the graceful palm, latticed against the fading gold of the sun-kissed sky--
"Where sun, moon and stars, at eventide, stage a welcome constituting the glorious galaxy of the firmament--
"Where the whispering breeze springs fresh from the lap of Caribbean and woos with elusive cadence like unto a mother's lullaby--
"Where the silver cycle is heaven's lavalier, and the full orbit its glorious pendant."
(widely circulated circa 1925)
_
They LIED!?????! OH NO!!!!

Is it worth living in Miami?
Let me see, besides dealing with high poverty rate, bars on the doors and windows and confusion between the local government and its population. You would be better off living in the central part of Florida, where you may work at a decent wage, rent with roomates and hang out on South Beach on the weekends with option of coming back home.
-Miami does have a crime rate, pretty high by comparision the national average.
- Most of the locals, tend to steer away from the bad areas. Where, it would make the good areas much more expensive to live, play and work.
-Also, the local economy is at a downturn, not enough jobs to go around. Even local school districts had started major cutbacks of lay-offs, 2000 (administratos, asst. principals and assistant), due to a $44 million budget short-fall.
_The local government only sees condos, as the future tax ratables to a city without a real Fortune 500 company, present. Most of the Fortune 500 companies has had left Miami in the early 90's (hint: good paying job leaving the city= lack of human capital to sustain them competitive).
Note: The irony of it all, Florida should be cheap labor and their still losing jobs in the Miami-Dade County Area.
-Local government jobs, it is no longer certain to hold onto a post for long periods of time.
-Labor Laws were written to protect the local businesses to firing you for no probable cause and lack of pay (local laws protect business and its tax haven regulations).
-Economist, once reported that if your in the construction business, general contractor or tourism. You will deal with perfect competition, reckless lawyers and endless scams.
Even the locals, tend to stay away from certain parts of the city, after 8pm. You will constantly seek blinking yellow lights, as a precautionary measurement to look both ways before crossing an intersection of drug dealers, prostitutes and thugs.
Note: I have a lady friend, where she had taken me to the Moderator cut: name(spanish diner). Oh boy, talk about a room full of crooks, thieves and drunken questionable characters (including the two police officers, sitting nearby us). Actually, I had felt sorry about the waitresses, they were being mistreated on the other tables (armed guard at the front door??). The eyes of misery and disparity says alot about the local culture in Miami.
Miami is not a safe place, even the locals are seeking a way out to other states or cities, (Georgia, Carolinas and/or Orlando outskirts).
Muchas Gracias!!

Sorry to burst your bubble but wages in Central Florida are not any better than in South Florida and the cost of living is not much lower either. I won't even get into the rest of your post.
