Read a interesting article on the Miami Herald site about upcoming plans for the city. I saw this quote on the article:

Quote:
A question remains: Why was the package never presented to voters? Even some Miami commissioners griped about having to digest vast material in such a short period, and a few activists raised voices about the public not being given a say.

''There comes a time, I think, when the elected officials have to assume the responsibility that the people placed on them, and they have to make the tough choices,'' said City Manager Hernandez. ``Otherwise, things would never get done.''
link (broken link)

The package in question has to do with the new tunnel, the museum downtown and the Marlins Stadium. What do you guys think about this whole deal?

Also if this guy wants to be this progressive about development then why the heck aren't they this progressive about mass transit? Just by pass voters and make it happen :S

In most cities, the major empploers would be backing some of these projects. We ont he other hand "approved" that half cent sales tax and I believe part of it was for this so called truck tunnel to the port. In any event, as with most of theproposals in Miami, I doubt most of this will come to fruition. Nonetheless, I don't think that doing several multimillion projects at the same time is financially wise...especially in Miami where we know how our politicians just can't help themselves and there is a lack of transparency in government. I wouldn't be agaisnt these projects, but we need to do things one at a time, we have enough on our plate with the airport out of control spending, the metrorail multi billion dollar expansion and upgrades to the downtown infrastructure. We also now have two white elepants in downtown area (Orange Bowl and Miami arena).

I still believe the Orange Bowl is not a good place to build a new stadium. It doesn't have enough space for it. Besides the ball park we need to think about plenty of parking space and most important, ways of access and exit. The road infrastructure around that area is too old and is out of space for expansion.

Orange Bowl is visibe from the 836, as you are driving over the "hump" near Jackson Memorial (exiting downtown), the OB is a big gray building to the left...it even says Orange Bowl on it. The exact location is the corner of NW 17 Ave and NW 7 St....

Wild Style the Orange Bowl is in Little Havana just south of the Jackson Memorial Hospital area on the south side of the Miami River. As for your first question these proposals were presented to the public a few years back with a bond issue that was approved by voters once the "Decade of Progress" bonds expired after 30 years which were issued in the 1970's. The Decade bonds is how we wound up with Metrorail, the cultural center downtown and most of the Government center buildings.

I read the Herald responses to these projects and the outrage of taxpayer money being wasted on such huge projects but where were these people when the proposals were brought up and approved by voters? Obviously either they were un informed or didn't bother to vote in the first place. One thing I don't remember is a ballpark for the Marlins in the proposals but the county has a certain amount of discretionary money they can use that's not directly tied to a specific project. I hope that answers your question!
