Stroll Through Miami
Wow, reading this thread is certainly a blast from the past! I have a lot of good memories growing up in Miami. Remember The Skipper Chuck Show, Sunniland RollerRink, Pizza Patio, The Hairy Eyeball in the Concord Plaza, Zayre's, Ma Grundy's, 36 West Lounge? Lot's of good memories, but life continuously changes and we have to move on.

I grew up in the 70s and am not living in Miami anymore but I remember so many wonderful places. Woolworth's on Miracle Mile, where I used to go every Saturday as a child, and have a snack at the counter there. Others: Jahn's (sp?) for ice cream and Swensen's too. Oh, and of course, what a joy it was to drive down US1 and smell the bread baking at Holsum's. Speaking of Holsum's, they used to have a magnificent Christmas display with all sorts of trains, towns, etc. And A&P on LeJeune Rd, not much of a supermarket, but all I remember is the Spanish bar cake my mom used to buy. What else? Oh, naturally Crandon Park. In the 80s, I'd go to Sunday's on the Bay on the way home from the beach. I will never forget Yumbrella either, which was the precursor to today's food courts. Sometimes I think of moving back to Miami, but I have since visited and it isn't the Miami I knew.

I never lived in Miami, but I used to vacation there every year and visit family. My family would get a place on Miami Beach for the week or two we'd be staying so we could have some fun in the sun too.
I was HEARTBROKEN whtn they took down the old Fountainbleau (sp?) yes, the new one is gorgeous, but when I was a kid and we'd drive up and see that ol' tacky but so cool mural at the end of Collins... it was just so neat. I looked forward to it every time, but now it's gone. I loved the Tropigala that was there too. It was this little reminder of yesteryear in a way.

It was a much smaller place and you had to slide down on these big, unwieldy rubber blue mats because the slides' surfaces were not smooth. Can anyone please confirm?

It was indeed Water Boggan on 49th Street in Hialeah, or Hialeah Gardens proper, after you passed the Palmetto underpass that was the only thing out there. They used blue mats because the surfaces were painted concrete. I remember riding down the flumes many a time and toward the end where the flumes met up you could gain enough momentum and swing yourself up and over into an adjoining flume. The look on some peoples faces when you did that was priceless. There was another Water Boggan in Pompano Beach as well. I think both Boggan's closed in the early 80's sometime. The site of the Water Boggan is occupied by a hotel now and Hialeah Gardens is filled with houses and urban sprawl, a far cry from the empty fields and a couple of factories and warehouses that were there 30 years ago.

Yep, the ice cream there was good. The guys with their period clothes (striped shirts, suspenders) and long mustaches shaped with mustache wax. The arcade across the way from Farrell's was fun too. There was also the Barefoot Mailman in Westland which was always good for a cheap laugh.

Miami-Dade County ...... in the mid-60s
LUM's on Miami Beach where they had those "steamed in beer" hotdogs
The Coconut Palm trees before they caught a disease and all had to be removed
People were actually "friendly"
Lincoln Road was elegant and had a free tram ride
Coral Gables was truly "The City Beautiful"
NOW..... I'm gonna cry........
