I loved Flynns Dixie Ribs on US1 and I worked at Sunniland Pharmacy, while I attended Palmetto High. Such memories reading everything you have posted. There was a a place called the Flame Rest in that shopping center too. Spent a lot of hours at Sunniland park watching the baseball games.

Let me see......
Growing up in the early 70's in Miami, I can remember the very first Eight Street Festival (Calle 8 Festival) around '73, Westchester Theatre (now Ross), where I saw the very first Star Wars movie, the Bowling Lanes at LeJeune Rd. (now gone), the best pizza downtown at McCrory's, Richard store, J. Byrons, Lums cafeteria, Tower Theatre at 8th. and 15th Ave., Shenandoah Park and the pool, Food Fair at 8th. and 19th. Ave, , Grand Union at Coral Way, the Arcade at Coral Way, Big Daddy's at Coral Way and 42nd. (now Blockbusters), El Farito, Crandon Park,...hmmmm...so long ago, happy memories of innocent days and carefree attitude and not a worry in the world.

Nice post, cholo57.
It made me think back of when I arrived in Miami, in 1966 as a single mom, and what it felt like to live there...... GONE but not forgotten is the feeling of living in Paradise!
The Miami-Dade County population semed to be half of what it is now - I had no fear of driving anywhere, anytime of the day or night - from Gables to Opa Locka, to North Miami, to the Keys, Gulfstream/ Hialeah Race Track, . People were friendly, stores were not crowded, summers were hot and winters were cold
There were actually coconut palm trees all over (before the blight that killed them in early 70s). Everyone spoke English and there was no frustration in communication. Miami Beach used to have beach-combing machines in the early morning, cleaning the beaches Yeah...... all gone but not forgotten
P.S. Sometimes when I remember all the good times I had in Miami in years past, I think of moving back.... BUT reality sinks in and I know everything is different now - yeah, gone but not forgotten !

Thank you ConeyIsBabe
Now that you mention the race track, I remember the Kennels/Dog track...somewhere close to the Zayre store...can't remember what street it was,..it was in a shopping strip, where there was also a movie theatre there....help, anyone remember?
I moved out of Miami back in '77 after high school, returned to Miami 2000 and left in 2007, upon my return, I noticed so much has changed,...people's attitude, the rude drivers, the congestion, appaling customer service....growing pains I guess.
Keep remembering them days.

I worked out of Homestead Air Reserve Base from 2000 - 2007, when I got there I remember seeing farms all around the base...within a few years (2 - 3 years) the inevitable housing boom took place and housing cost went thru the roof. I personally kwew coworkers that had bought condos in the lower 40's and 50's...and in a short time later, had double in price, but that's another issue ...still, I like Homestead and South Dade. It has that small town vibe to it, and very friendly.
OK, my 0.2 cents worth...back to my box.

That's the place! I went there several times with my brother and father. The wild mouse rollercoaster was great. There was one turn where the front of the car would be hanging out waaayyy over the edge of the track about 30 feet of the ground and then it would quickly snap 90 degrees to the left and drop down to ground level. A great ride.
The log flume was cool too. If you loaded up the front of the log you could really soak the person in back...usually dear old dad.
Thanks for the link.
