I bowled at the Coliseum, ate at Sweden House and Royal Castle, and visited the Wax Museum.
There are a few other memories that I know are now gone: Charlie Baxter as MT Graves; Skipper Chuck Zink; Dolphins' games on the radio with Rick Weaver and Larry King (yes THAT Larry King); sports reports with Morris McLemore and Joe Cronin (Channel 7?); the thrill of watching the Jackie Gleason Show broadcast live from Miami every week; the annual arrival of Santa at the downtown Jordan Marsh; Baltimore Orioles games on TV and radio.
My favorite pizza came from a place called Meyer's - any idea if that's still around? Sticking with restaurants, how about Wolfie's for corned beef and ice cream? Lum's, with their beer-steamed hot dogs? Is Royal Castle completely gone? - they'd just switched over to a completely automated ordering system when I lived there, and changed their name to Royal Carouselle.
The two big grocery chains were Winn-Dixie and Food Fair. Are they still around, or have they been usurped?
Are there still fishing piers adjacent to the public beaches? I specifically remember Haulover Pier. I once saw a guy catch a huge barracuda off that pier, just yards from bathers - is that still around?
So many questions - what do others remember about Miami in the mid-late 1960's, into the early 1970's?

There used to be a Food Fair at S.W. 8th. st. and 22nd. Ave.,..around the corner from where we used to live.
I believe they became Grand Union..then it disappeared.
Winn-Dixie still around...even here in Alabama .

My first memory of Miami was not a place, but a person - Ann Bishop.

Yeah, I remember much of what you mention. I left in '68, never to return. I think the Winn-Dixies were called Kwik Chek back then. Remember the U Tote'Ms (kind of a 7-11 knock off)? I remember great pizza at the Black Diamond Inn. It was off LeJeune somewhere near 8th St, I think. And the downtown Walgreen's with the balcony lunch area. And the downtown library in Bayfront Park, where young boys like me were warned to watch out for perverts. There was a great deli on Red Rd across from the Holsum bread bakery, I think it was called Sam & Carl's. How about Dobbs House, kind of a classy burger joint. We loved MT Graves (and his alter-ego who showed sci-fi films, MT Space!) My brother and I used to go over to the White Castle on S. Dixie and chow down on burgers and birch beers. Crandon Park had a great beach, and I remember driving past the "colored" beach to get to it. Miami was still segregated in those days. Sometimes for fun, we drive over to the airport, walk right into the terminal waiting areas (no security in those days) and watch planes take off. There was a Howard Johnson's in the Gables Bus Terminal where you could get a fantastic fried clam roll. Always fun to go to Gables Music Store, where it was rumored they'd sell you a copy of the "dirty" lyrics to Louie, Louie for 75 cents under the counter, LOL! WFUN and WQAM were the radio stations of choice. Rick Shaw and Charlie Murdock were "boss". Ahhh, memories!

Hey, hey! This is no fun! Get back to the subject of the thread. Does anyone remember the seahorse in the middle of Dadeland Mall? or the cafeteria there?

ok, I'm going to have to stop reading these threads because I'm actually starting to get homesick, and I never thought I'd miss Miami but I have to admit I do miss the old Miami (the one I grew up in!)
Here are some of the places never forgotten:
The Coliseum
Plitt Gables (or was it Twin Gables?) Movie theater on coral way
Miracle Center
Contempo
Neighbors Restaurant (their boston creme pic was AWSOME)
Grand Union
Coral Gables Elementary Christmas Shows (were incredibly good!)
Miracle Mile Movie Theater (where I had my first kiss lol)
Villa Italia
The Little General Convenient Store
Pollo Supremo
Gwens Place (little diner on 67th and 8th street, or 10th, had the best breakfast!)
Zayres on 7th st NW and 37th ave
La Lechonera (best cuban sandwiches ever)
Latin America on coral way
Pitts BBQ
Munchies by CG high school
Velvet Creme

I didn't realize she passed away. I just googled her name and it seems she passed right after I moved. Bummer. She was a staple. Say what you want about Miami but there were some terrific news anchors and reporters down there. The ones here in Tampa don't even come close with maybe an exception or two.
