Hi All,
I'm a 48 year old single female. I work in the Architecture/Design field in NYC. I've never been to Miami. I'm looking to move to a city that I can still work in,( not all cities have decent growth where I can find work in my field), and be near the ocean. Like I said, I know nothing about Miami. All I know is that I would have to work IN Miami if I want work in my field.

What I want to know is; are there decent middle class neighborhoods that are close to the city, with water views where you can rent a town home with a yard for around $1500/month? Are there areas that may be more suburban with water views that aren't that far from the city?

Hm, unfortuntely for that price, i think the only water view you will be able to find is a lake or canal if you are lucky.

Look at a map of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties and become familiar with the names of the municipalities, neighborhoods, and main roads.

For $1500 a month you may be able to find old studio (efficiency) or small (750 sq.ft.) 1 bedroom condo in northern Miami Beach (north beach), probably with street parking, or up towards Aventura if you are lucky; if you go into Broward County, you may be able to find a newish studio or small one bedroom condo in Hollywood Beach, but that would be probably a 45-60 minute commute to downtown Miami, maybe a bit less if you work in the Design District.

If you want a small townhouse with a yard, you would probably have to go west, away from the ocean, and, as mentioned, your water view would be a canal, maybe a lake. Plenty of those in Pembroke Pines, in Broward County, for example; in Dade County, maybe Kendall Lakes or Miami Lakes, but it would probably be something old, not to mention small, at that price.

Good Luck!

Please don't make a decision to move to Miami without spending some time here first. This city is not what many people picture it to be and they are often disappointed once they've moved here and they find out it's not all palm trees and fashion models.
Also, make sure you have a job lined up before you move here. Jobs are hard to come by and generally, pay less than other places. If you've been working in New York, expect to make 20 to 30% less than what you made there.
There's numerous threads like yours in this forum, read a few of them to get an idea of the pros and cons of life here.

Step 1: Learn about Miami BEFORE you "think about moving to Miami."

Look into midtown or near by neighborhoods. My uncle just moved to midtown and really likes it. It north of downtown and costs less. Also, it's right next to wynwood and everyone says it's the most hippest part miami right now.

I found a couple studios in Miami Beach for $750 btw. Miami Beach is just a bridge away from city.

Also, if it means anything, all my friends in their 20's that live in the stinky suburbs want to move to wynwood.

Miami is no different than any other city as in you have good or bad parts as well as traffic during certain times of day. Don't listen to stereotypes because they are of no help especially about jobs being low paying which is somewhat true but you could find plenty of people making decent money as well. Just spend some time out here an see how it feels. Also I think you should check out brickwell(downtown) it is up and coming an has some apartments in your range.
