I did not get an answer to this on the TV Entertainment thread, but maybe someone has a theory here....

Both my vehicles are registered in Florida. Among the advantages IMHO is only having a rear plate.

I am about 2/3 through the "Dexter" series which takes place in Miami and other locations in Florida. In every scene that includes the front of a vehicle, police or private, the vehicle has a Florida vehicle mounted on the front. Bugs the stuff out of me.

Why would they feel they had to do that for the show? I know most states require front and back. Might they feel that many viewers would not believe a vehicle without a front plate??

Most of that show was filmed in California despite being set in Miami. Naturally, there's quite a lot of inconsistencies.

I watched it while still in California and didn't know about no front plates until moving to Florida, by the way they are Tags, not Plates.
As the poster above says, all exteriors were filmed in Long Beach, CA and before knowing that I did research on affordable places in Coconut Grove, ha.

An answer I found on another forum, about the Tags, is that, for convenience they put a stick-on decal, instead of having to unscrew the original plates and screw on the fake ones, since it's filmed in California they have to cover the front plates.

Your theory about having to cover the local "tags" makes the most sense. Thanks for the info.......

I think they're called license PLATES and the tags are the yearly stickers we put on the plates. For some reason tags has been used interchangeably with tags now even though they really are license plates.

I'll have to go back to the first season to see how they handled the license plates/tags.

All my life I have referred to them as license plates....... But, whatever.

The Miami police department building depicted in Dexter isn't the real Miami Police department building. It really doesn't matter.

Semi-related to this thread, I am trying to watch movies or series filmed in Miami.
So I went back to Season 1 of Dexter.
As ThomasM... mentions it is clear that it was filmed in Miami. The license plates for all vehicles are only on the back, and a few vehicles with front plates show the flag of another Country. Only an Ice Truck has front plates from Florida. Do vehicles of a certain size require front plates?

And in re-viewing Season 1, some discoveries - spoilers ahead.

I have been to the block/corner where Debra hopes the killer will show up, Riviera Botanica, hasn't changed a bit since 2006. And funny I didn't see this before, different plot lines and times and dates on the calendar seem to happen in the same block on Ocean Drive, sometimes You see Beacon Hotel, others Colony Hotel. I think that's about where Scarface was filmed in the previous Century.
