Pick up a Garmin gps and use it for everything. Drive from main location A to B only and stay on main roads. Do not stop for anything between your sites in the Miami area. Study Spanish and carry a Spanish book. Start each day with a full tank. Key Largo on down to Key West slow down and stop wherever you like. Yes this is something you can do and should do. Go directly from the air port to your first night in the Key Largo area. Try to spend a day in each park as you drive down the keys. Do not welcome crime by appearing confused, lost, needy, helpless, and generally playing the role of the victim. Study Traveladvisor, www.visitflorida.com and others. Study the weather history to pick your best time. Key West was very hot in August.

We'd appreciate any insights you have.
The Miami airport exits in a hub where it links you to several expressways. Just plan ahead and make sure you know the name of the expressway you need to take since there is construction work over there. (Example If you are going straight to the keys, take the Turnpike Southbound, if you are going to Miami beach then expressway 112) Follow the signs when exiting the airport since a GPS might not be updated with the new road changes. For the rest of the city the GPS should be accurate.
