Is it still the best neighborhood? How would it compare to a city in Silicon Valley?

Zillow has one listing at $19.5 mil.
You can get on nearby Palm Island for under $2 mil, although, that's probably a dump. :-D

Does Palm Island get a security guard?

Yes. A security guard and a checkpoint booth with a gate.

I believe these islands were where once famous mafia leaders lived such as Al Capone

I would say Silicon Valley is not really where Celebrities live versus Star Island which in my opinion more famous or well known people live. Both are very expensive so I don't think it would be that much of a difference however I would say Star Island seems more secluded then Silicon Valley.

It seems Palm Island is a lot cheaper. Is it a nice place to live? Are there any criminals/hoodlums?

Only rich criminals. They won't rob anyone directly.

Of course not. It costs about $2 million + to live there.

They are not gated but I'd look at the Venetian Islands before the three off of the MacArthur Causeway. They are way more convenient and you never have to deal with the bad traffic of the MacArthur. You can also bike and walk easily among the islands and to South Beach and DT.
