Has anyone ever seen an Armadillo in Miami-Dade County? I have never seen one but have read that they are found throughout the state.

I have only seen them in the middle of the state and further north, but never in south Florida. But then again folks have seen foxes down here and I never have.

My husband said he saw an armadillo one time in our backyard in Palmetto Bay. This was maybe 3-4 years ago, and it was just once, in the 28 years we lived in that house. You see them occasionally as road kill there, but that's about it.

We see them sometimes here where we live in Charlotte County. We've even chased a few around the yard- they can dig some impressive holes in the soil, under plants, even the house foundation, looking either for grubs or to build a nest. But it's a lot more rural here than where we were in Dade County.

They used to be common here but rare now. May be in the western sections. We had them all over our yard in Port St. Lucie. We sold our house up there recently and they were living in the vacant lot next door. I would see them all the time.

I saw a dead one a few months ago on the stretch of US-1 in the extreme southern end of the county right before you start crossing over to Key Largo.

I've seen them in Everglades National Park. I remember seeing one in the late afternoon as it was foraging a few feet from the road to Royal Palm (Anhinga Trail/Gumbo Limbo trail).

Yeah because when startled they jump up they don't have a chance when they cross the road.

Armadillos don't move very fast, and reportedly they don't see very well either. Seems those would be strikes against them when they're trying to cross a road.
