Why are many of you against this? None of the other malls in Miami have a ski slope, a water park, a theme park, and a lake for water skiing.

Besides, I think this mall will coax stores out of other malls instead of the opposite. For instance, it's sister mall, American Dream Meadowlands lured Saks Fifth Avenue out of Short Hills.

What if a Barneys New York is one of the anchors? Miami doesn't have one of those.

I suspect the first to jump ship for the American Dream mall will be Barnes & Noble in Pembroke Pines. But then again, maybe not, the rent will probably be a LOT higher.

Barneys is coming to Bal Harbor and will take over the space presently occupied by Saks.

Does Barnes & Noble make any money? Every time I am there I get the feeling I am in a public library. People are reading books, studying, and doing class assignments but few are buying anything other than coffee. How do they survive?

I think they survive in part because of the coffee. Also, the fact that the books don't expire.

Please, please draw some of the traffic away from Aventura!

Wrong location, more development encroaching on the Everglades. What ever happened to "Eastward Ho?" The Infrastructure is just not there. By comparison, the current largest mall, Mall of America in Minnesota, has two highway exits and a light rail station as it was redeveloped from a football stadium, and it's right next to the airport (which also has light rail stop). A lot of people live in all directions around that mall, it's not like here where everybody lives to the east. That light rail station is actually busier than the downtown stations and greatly mitigates the traffic impact. Here, everything would have to be built from scratch, at great cost to the County and State, and let's face it, there will never be a mass transit connection to that part of the County. It would be great, however, for the North Miami Superfund site, Sun Life Stadium parking crater, or perhaps Homestead--the fastest growing part of the County. These locations even have potential for eventual transit connections.

Actually, there's remarkably little traffic around the existing malls. I'm theorizing that people tend to shop in bigger groups here. Anyone else have a better idea?

Aventura gets pretty bad traffic, but I'm not sure it it's the main Aventura Mall itself or the dozens of big box strip malls within 1-2 miles of the mall. Well, except for holiday shopping which really is the mall itself. So my theory is most people shop at the mall seasonally, especially when there are sales going on.

Of course, mall plus theme park would have more of a regional draw, more like Aventura. Mall plus theme park during the holidays...not gonna be pretty.
