Cool Rude people in Miami - According to who??

I have read a lot of posts bashing Miami, especially about it having so many rude people and how it is so nice to go back home to (insert anytown, USA), and realize how nice people are there.

By nice do you mean:

1) A robotic waitress that welcomes you with "Hi, how are you doing, my name is Alyssa, how can I help you today?" - and you can find the same welcome in ANY restaurant that you go - do you think this is being nice? How about fake and robotic?

2) Opening doors - I HATE when people are 4 feet in front of me and hold the door/elevator open to me, to be "nice" - but I am the one that has to run to catch it, so that I don't leave them hanging, because of their niceness! I can open a door, thank you very much!

3) Drivers - yeah, because in DC, Chicago, and NYC drivers are soooooo polite.

4) Neighbors, people in the street in a nice suburb that say "Hi, how are you" - I find this politness mostly fake.

5) People backstabbing in the workplace - yeah, because NYC, Chicago, LA are not competitive places AT ALL and such horror NEVER happens there.

As for service - You can get bad service anywhere - if you do, don't go back or complain to the manager. Stop whining! And try being nice yourself, and see the response that you get. Most people will be nice in return.

For the record, I am currently living in the Midwest and can't wait to leave all these "nice" people behind and move to Miami.

Bottom line - if you don't like Miami move out, more space for me!

Sorry I just had to vent.

I agree, if you don't like common courtesy or the civility of the Midawest, Miami is the exact opposite. If you want genuine rudeness and aggression, this is the place. If people are nice here, they want something. No, there is no robotic niceness, I know what you are talking about. The customer service here doesn't even follow the "chain" procedures...so you are safe from that lol. And when I have driven in other cities...I would say the drivers here are much more aggressive...but I suppose this is subjective, since other people on here say that this isn't the case.

I dunno the people are fine here. I prefer looking at people as individuals, but I generally don't have any problems. Customer service is fine, I don't get the plastic robot thing here but I haven't encountered much "unprofessionalism" and waitresses tend to be flirty, a plus . I don't know, I find it to be a variety of different types of people here, but I don't really encounter anyone going out of their way to be "rude". I mean if I lived in Hollywood I might feel different (I have seen that rude thing going on there) but I generally find people here to be "down to earth", sometimes on the defensive/aggressive side. I think Miami is "Rude" but some people love it. Chileto, how long have you lived here, where else have you lived, and where is your ideal location? You almost seem like you are forcing yourself to hate it here.

I agree 100% , well said. Come on down, it's 75 degrees and the water is warm! In general people here are the same as everywhere else and I agree with compelled- waitresses do flirt down here!

Enough said from me, because I know - unfortunately - this will eventually become another "Miami sucks" forum!

I am originally from the midwest and don't find the people here to be all that rude.

My experiences here have shown me that people are pretty much at face value. The ones that dislike you make little, if any, effort to hide it. The ones that do like you are generally quite friendly and hospitable.

As far as strangers and common courtesy, those are things reserved for places other than here. Drivers are definitely more aggressive here than the midwest (in general). I rarely get a smile from passers by on the street unless I present one first. But when you do get one it goes a long way. Up north its so expected that it doesn't feel like it means anything.

One thing I've not seen much of here is that kind of person that is sickeningly sweet, yet condescending at the same time. The kind that will wish you happy sunshiny good morning and backhand compliment you every damn day. This person also talks about you (and everyone else) behind your back.

I used to run into these people in the midwest a lot. I don't think they mean harm, but they are very annoying and nosy.

What you describe is exactly what I miss from outside Miami. The places you mention with similar problems, are overcrowded with similar people. Since you mention in general terms how Americans act, I want to be more specific; in my personal case, I love the South, I've been in TN, North FL, Louisiana, Texas and I love that "how you doin't today sweetie" from the girls with a big beautiful smile and IN FREAKING ENGLISH. That is what I miss. Regular people sayin good morning on the street with a smile, people who talk about anything in the elevator, people who pay attention while driving.

In Miami I get the impression that I'm dealing with totems. Always with a bad look, a depressed face, a rude attitude...you go to a fast food restaurant, you don't even get a "next", just a weird expression with the mouth; then "what do you want" - "for here or to go" (not even looking at your eyes) that is disgusting. And that is just one example of so many freak situations here. I talk with a lot of people from Broward county and they refuse to cross south of the border just because of these things.

And finally, Yes I'm leaving Miami in a couple of months.

.
Kind of like "Minnesota Nice" . I know exactly what you are talking about. I'm so glad we are almost devoid of that crap. I don't know, I just went to get my car fixed, and everybody was professional, and a lot of them were actually chatty (in a good way). I find this tends to be the rule not the exception but I'm not saying I haven't had a couple of bad customer service experiences, although I have never ran into the "no speaky inglez" situation that I have ran into in unexpected places like Loundoun County VA and the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio.

Haha. Oddly enough, when I was writing the description, I had a very particular person in mind from when I was living in Minnesota.

Obviously there are many genuine people in Minnesota and the rest of the midwest as well, to be fair. But those type of people don't seem to like it here and that's fine with me.

I agree with everything except the elevator part. Someone holding the door for you and you hustling a little to get to the elevator should be the very last thing you get upset about.

I mean really, give me a break, someone saying they HATE that is just about the silliest thing I have ever heard! I think if someone gave me attitude for me holding the elevator door for them, I would close the door and then coldcock them!

Default YEAH, Miami IS Rude

I guess it depends on what you call rude. I lived in Miami for 7 years (1992-1999) and found it extremely rude, but maybe it's my upbringing. I didn't like people standing within 8" of me in line--invades my personal space. The drivers will pull over right in front of you at 70 mph on the interstate. Some drivers pulled over across 3-4 lanes in one swoop in fast traffic. I didn't like the checker at the grocery checking my groceries out without saying a single word to me, not even hello. I didn't like hearing Spanish ALL the time. I didn't like seeing billboards and signs in Spanish only. I especially didn't like people talking bad about me in Spanish Right in Front of me. I didn't like people standing in a large group on the sidewalk or the mall taking up the entire walking space and not moving to let people pass unless you said an extremely loud "excuse me." I'm going back next week for a visit. Update available then.
