Default Storm Surge Control

I made an offer yesterday on a house located in Fort Lauderdale -- on a canal near the ICW. I've heard from several persons that there are a series of locks that release water in the area in anticipation of a storm surge, but can't find anything on the topic on the Internet. Does anyone know anything about this, or can someone direct me to a Web site that explains how this works -- if in fact it exists?

Check out the South Florida Water Management District on the web. They are the water authority. What they do is control the lake and canal levels for drinking water purposes. They also control the locks, and yes, they do release water in anticipation of heavy rain events or hurricanes. That in itself doesn't affect anyone, it is actually done to prevent flooding during the storms themself, they actually lower the canal levels. The locks are all across the area, but mainly out in the Everglades.

I think storm surge is a genuine concern for you, but the pre storm release of water isn't really an issue for anyone.
