I lived in Miami for 33 years (born and raised in Pinecrest) and moved to CLT for almost 1.5 years. It's not dirty and non community like you describe it at all. I'm currently in Denver right now and would love to move back to Miami (family and friends there) but I honestly think it's for the wrong reasons and I'm living off memories of what doesn't exist anymore.

You have no idea of the shock you're going to get for insurance and taxes as compared to NC now. I'd seriously really reconsider your move.

I agree, himain. I like Charlotte a lot, its my fave big city. Its pretty friendly for a city its size, and I like the 4 mild seasons, etc. Lower cost of living with higher pay (on avg) than Miami too.

When was the last time you were actually in Miami? 2003 was a very long time ago and Miami is very different place now. I would not recommend moving there unless you are either independently wealthy or moving here to accept jobs that pay REALLY good money. It doesn't matter what extended family connections you have there. It costs a lot to live in Miami (if you want a decent quality of life), and no one should count on family to help them out financially or otherwise for too long. The cost of everything in Miami is significantly higher than NC and most jobs that are available in the Miami area---if you're lucky enough to find one---don't pay all that much compared to what it costs to live there. I advise caution. Not saying that you shouldn't do it, but plan your finances very carefully.

We actually visit for at least 1 week at a time, two to three times the year.. but yes, that's NOTHING compared to living there again.

BTW - I am very lucky to have the family I do in Miami... I wouldn't depend on them financially, but I know that emotionally, they will always be there, even if that means dropping everything... you know that latin culture that can be such a PIA!!! Its good for things like this... LOL

I teach so I would have a job, but after a lot of research, homework and discussions, my husband and I are moving to Cary!

Thank you everyone...

Btw hubby's side of the family lives in NC and we LOVE Cary, but beware it is moving very fast and realestate is growing rapidly as well. Although it will never be a Miami it is growing and what you might have seen last year will be completely different this year.

NC is growing leaps and bounds so expect more traffic and more city like surroundings. Think of the Raliegh, Durham, Cary areas like Atlanta, for the moment, so the beginnings to early midpoint Houston realestate explosion.

We love Miami and I have lived here since 1978 and miss the old Miami like all the old timers and for the life of me can't picture myself here in my 70's but then again I know NC and when 8 bucks for a simple plate of black beans and rice is the most ethnic I am torn. We are looking more towards middle Florida for now.
