Why does Miami Beach have such nasty roads and sidewalks?
Considering how overpriced south Beach is, all the streets seem run down and the sidewalks are a mess. Does anyone know why after all these years the streets there are still full of cracks and potholes, and the sidewalks and swales are rutted and nasty?

I always wondered the same thing, way back since SOBE took off in the early 90s?? You know, a couple of years after it started becoming popular. I thought that is was thriving, and the tax base had to be growing explosively at that time...but there weren't many aesthetic improvements other than giving the cement a pink color tone. I suppose, although I don't remember personaly, that the roads must have been REALLY bad, poor if any drainage etc. I do remember they were constantly putting in new utilities under the roads...but you are right, they didn't seem to pretty it up too much, considering it is the world famous South Beach.
I would venture to say that Miami Beach has invested in other areas such as Lincoln Road....and there HAS to be gross theft of money in that city government with that huge tax base. Does anyone else have any other ideas?

I noticed the same thing. I moved to South Beach from the Chicago area and expected "luxury", but it seems as if the luxury is limited to Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road. The core of South Beach is truly a sh*thole. It always smells like sewer, the roads and sidewalks are poor, and there's trash and stray cats EVERYWHERE! I couldn't even count how many broken appliances and pieces of trashed furniture I see sitting outside when jogging around South Beach. It's actually pretty gross. I have to say I was really disappointed. The beach is definitely cool to visit, but I'd never live here again...I'm packing up and taking off to Coconut Grove next week...hopefully it'll be an improvement.

You know what's funny? I came to Miami Beach for the first time on vacation with my family in 1985. I was 9 years old. And I kept in my mind the characteristic pavement on the roads, the classic pink sidewalks, the bumps in the crossings, and they are the same today!! many of those roads and sidewalks haven't been fixed in decades! and talking from 1985 we are close to the quarter century! LOL.

I Think Its A Stupid Question And I Guess Its Because They Didnt Start Working On That Yet. Not Just Miami But Ft.lauderdale, West Palm And Many Smaller Cities, Actually Every Smaller Cities In South Florida Except Weston, Jupiter, Cooper City, And Those Islands.
