We have several Wal-Mart stores in our county; the Super Wal-Marts, the traditional WMs and the Wal-Mart Neighborhood stores (they only sell food and Rx).

None of the areas have become trashed because of any of these stores.

The mall at 163 ST went downhill way before Walmart got there. I would say that it really started going downhill around the time Aventura started expanding

I don't live in FL, so was just assuming that the area for the proposed store would be in a nice area.

I have a friend who's mother lived 98 years in the same house until she died. The neighborhood in NY was a traditionally Irish neighborhood when she was born. It had changed several times and was a Korean neighborhood when she died.

If you want a traditional neighborhood then raze all of the buildings, make it into a swamp again and give it back to the animals.
Valid point, though gentrification often has a negative effect on poorer people who are priced out of the area. And sorry to get a bit political, but I find it really hypocritical when the "progressive" types who complain about how capitalism subjugates the poor and whatnot are the first ones to flock to these neighborhoods.

It is in a nice area between the Design district / Midtown Miami , Morningside , Edgewater & Wynwood which is gentrifying. The new Miami 21 Zoning code wouldn't allow something as large as a Wal-Mart Superstore within the city limits of Miami hence they had to modify their plans.

Remember Midtown also used to be a 30 plus acre Florida East Coast railroad yard in the middle of a dense area. At least it had a plan. I wonder what you thought should have gone there instead?
Tri-Rail is thinking of putting a station there too.

Walmart is like a magnet for trashy people, it is no surprise people do not want a Walmart near them.

Then I have to thank my lucky stars that we don't have trashy people in our vicinity.
