addressing an issue on this forum
something i am noticing is that people (you know who you are) are continually bogging down information brought on the miami area. i recently made a topic concerning a poll (a public poll, mind you) stating that most people would not enjoy life here. i was then continually told something around these lines
Quote:

does south florida have problems? sure, so do all the other areas
|
that is fine, but this sub forums entire purpose is to discuss miami's problems and to inform people with credible information who may aspire to move here. everyone knows miami has nice weather and beaches, this is common sense, not everyone knows it has crime. of course all the other areas of the united states have problems, no one ever said they didn't or that miami's where any worse.
another issue, again, you know who you are, is that people who do not even live at least near the area continually want to give their advice. there is continual talk about how tourists never understand an area's true problems (even the people who always want to drop their 2 cents say this) yet after visiting a few times they feel they are a living encyclopedia on the area.
in essence, if you are moving somewhere, would you take the advice of someone who lives there or someone who lives an hour or two away? a lot of "negative" things are said about miami and south florida in general, and they are usually true; if you venture into the south florida slums (which are dangerously close to the middle-high income areas) you will find trouble. does this mean that the entire south florida is hell? definitely not. HOWEVER, you should note how much you'd be making before moving because the cost of living here is pretty high.
MiamiHerald.com - Miami & Ft. Lauderdale News, Weather, Dolphins & More
that is the miami newspaper, if you want to move here i advise you follow up on it for a bit to feel out what you may or may not encounter; there is also a list of events and activities going on around.
my personal opinion, from someone who has lived in south florida for about 8 years, (attending the school system during this time), is that you will not have all that great of a time if you don't have money. if you are alone and make at least $45,000++ that is a whole different story.

Well said Blacklight. Some people like to excuse South Florida's bad behavior by pointing to other areas and saying they are bad too. Yet those same posters would never excuse a murderer's behavior by saying, "Oh well, other people murder too". Bad is bad and pointing out Miami's problems is perfectly appropriate on this forum. People need to know the truth. Tourists just have no idea. Hey, I had a layover in Houston airport for an hour; that makes me an expert. Ask me about Houston.

No place is as bad as Miami, at least not in the State of Florida.
I used to prosecute medical fraud cases. 95% of them were out of Miami.
Just ask the Federal authorities that are about to take over Miami-Dade's housing programs, because of the rampant corruption. The area is getting cut off from several source of Federal aid because of noncompliance and dirty dealing. It is the nature of the place...it is simply corrupt to the core.
Generalizations are always going to be false, of course. Miami-Dade county and the rest of South Florida have wonderful communities, but the forum "apologists" for Miami proper need a reality check. The place is a hole.
Perhaps they all moved here from Newark or Baltimore and don't know any better?

I am from Bklyn NYC and have seen far worse than Miami in terms of living conditions. However I still strongly dislike South Florida. So the "they have seen worse" theory doesn't really make sense to me. I have had friends move down from NYC and left in short order.
People just need to realize Miami/South Florida is not paradise for everyone. Some like it, some don't. For those that complain, I say so what. Let them complain, what difference does it make. Some people sing South Florida praise, people should be entitled to their opinion. Anyone getting upset because someone doesn't like South Florida should have a long hard look at themselves.

I think that vistors from out-of-state see things that locals don't see also, when you live in the area for a long time the novelty wears off and the area becomes an average looking place to you. Visitors see the beauty of the place that locals take for granted.Visitor's don't know the bad areas of Miami or the pocket of bad areas the city has where the locals would.Visitor's are looking for their hotel destination, having a good time at the beach, eating at fine rstaurants and then returning home.
I think it is a good thing that information is given to forewarn people before moving to Miami, but it should not be in a bashing sense as it seems to connote that the whole city is a ghetto or third-world country by some people on this Miami Forum. There are a lot of nice areas in Miam,i more nice than bad areas. Miami has its problems, but people have personal computer today and satellite imagery whereby they can educate themselves on this city before moving here. They would be a fool not to do that.I feel people bash their city and criticize their city because they are unhappy people and nothing better else to do with their lives and want to make others life miserable. It is all in how you want to look at the glass, half-empty or half-full.

I find that rather hard to believe, unless they just immigrated from sub-Saharan Africa.
