How pathetic!!! And that is supposed to be a good thing? Living a lie? being ashamed of your family? I knew a few people like that, and this was in the 1990's and 2000's They would not let their parents/grandparents speak when you visited their home and treated them like garbage. That sounds like great family values. Maybe that's what American values are all about, being ashamed of your family. No one has to speak Spanish, I know tons of hispanics who can't even speak it, but denying and being ashamed of your family is pathetic and idiotic.

Well, I lived in Miami before Mariel and after Mariel, and yes, don't forget the RIOTS.
But after Marielitos settled or were interned and the AAs were appeased, the city returned more or less to normalcy.

It seems to me, according to people living there after 1984, that the real change for the worse took place during the 90's with the massive arrival of people not significantly present in Miami before.

I would say late 90s is when Miami started to change again, 1998/1999. But this kinda happens in Miami, we have a few years of major change then things quite down for 10 years and then it starts changing again.

If the high real estate prices can come back to reality, Miami will attract and keep quality residents and innovators. As long as outsiders keep the Ponzi scheme going and local government is addicted to high property taxes Miami is seriously hindered. Add in the world's refugees filling the area and the chance of becoming what it once was evaporates.

A bit of an extreme case, to be sure, but it is called assimilation. Every wave of immigrants in the past has done it: Germans, Irish, Italians, etc. Only recent (past 30+ years) immigrants seem to be bucking hte trend. Maybe its modern communications that make it easier to stay in touch with the home country. When you can watch the same tv stations on sat that you watched in South America and when you can get your same morning radio station on the internet I guess it is harder to assimilate.
Still, shame and embarrassment can be a powerful motivator to change behavior. It sounds heartless when we live in a PC world where you are not supposed to ever hurt anyone's feelings but it is still true. If you are learning a language and instead of using the word you mean to use you instead use a word that has a sexual meaning... believe me you will never forget those two words again.

I do not think that the language barrier is the source of Miami's problems. It was actually the constant stream of immigrants, and the fact that Miami became the disaster it is now on a mountain of illegal drug money. If these things did not happen Miami would have never developed into the dumpster it is now. Refugees from places like Venezuela who were flush with cash were a scourge on the local economy as well. The Cubans from 1960 came here poor and not until they built a network of crony politicians did they become a force in this area. Many of them did produce children who assimilated well into the local culture. I have known a few who did not even learn Spanish! Perhaps now that the United States is in decline, immigrants will stop coming and the pockets of foreign culture will be absorbed into more traditional North American culture.

Tallrick

Latins are like Gypsies, they don't assimilate, "they assimilate others".
Just like old Romans.
You will be assimilated, resistance is futile.
Immigrants don't loose their language and their culture anymore anywhere, even less Spanish. Not to learn Spanish if you're Hispanic is moronic and suicidal.
