I just saw some woman on Fox (Maria Elvira Salazar). She sounded like a tourist visiting USA, but to my surprise she said she was born and raised in Miami. Is this normal?

Default Yo!

Salazar sounds fine in English. If anything, she slightly over-enunciates, doesn't say "duh" as filler. She's learned a good conversational English. Without knowing her name, or hearing her speak in Spanish, I wouldn't guess that she was of Cuban extraction. Only that she was likely 2nd or 3rd generation speaking English, from her slightly too-careful pronunciation.

In fact, she sounds better (speaks better) than most native English speakers in casual conversation. That may be because it was a formal situation for her - she was being interviewed on TV. It'd be interesting to hear her speak in casual conversation.

Surely we're not going to criticize her for speaking English too well, are we?

Maria Elvira Salazar: New dawn for the Cuban people | On Air Videos | Fox News

Listen to her around 2:00: "I was born and raised in the Hoonited States..."

I think that maybe you got used to this sort of thing and don't hear it anymore.

Yes she sounds "normal" for Miami, some people that are born and raised here in Miami speak both languages and you wouldn't know they are hispanic and then you have many people like her that still retain an accent like this.

I listened to it a couple of times @ Fox News - I hear "United States". I think she over-enunciates a bit, she'd sound more natural (more like a US native speaker) if she relaxed her lips & the musculature around her throat & jaws a bit. But that's a quibble. She doesn't sound Hispanic to me - just a trace of accent, & mostly it's the over-pronunciation.

Her modulation is very peculiar, even when speaking Spanish
